Yeah, HLS refueling launches will still be over 10 and they have boiloff issues. By quick, I wonder if they mean within something like 6 months or 1 month. SpaceX will have to put a lot of R&D effort into mitigating boiloff for a cheaper and more sustainable mars architecture.

It's because they didn't buy the blue checkmark from Elon, so they're limited to 280 characters instead of 10,000 that all blue checkmarks get. Considering that they're a public company, you'd think they'd have the funds to spend $8/mo for that difference. But I guess they're cheapening out on that too.

I saw this on twitter, aren't Starship hot gas thrusters very similar to the Advanced Cryogenic Evolved Stage IVF? Both are taking boil off propellant and putting it to work, its just that ACES attatches an electrical generator and heat exchanger for venting small amounts of boiloff and simultaneously cooling the rest of the depot. Seems like you should be able to modify hot gas thruster propellant system to provide cooling and electricity to long term depots. And they can always beef up insulation on depot Starships since payload from earth isn't very important. And add white coating to reject more sunlight.

remember OFT-1 when the FTS blew an 8-foot hole in both tanks, while the booster was doing supersonic backflips, in atmosphere, and it STILL took 40 seconds to actually fail?
actually that raises a good question: how destructive of a weapon would you need to truly guarantee structural failure of the booster? I honestly think that even an RPG-7 wouldn't be enough to do it for sure

ULA gearing up for first Vulcan launch, SpaceX delays launch of its giant Starship rocket to swap out a part
---
https://spacenews.com/ula-gearing-u
> BERLIN — All the major components for the first Vulcan Centaur rocket are now at the launch site as United Launch Alliance prepares for a launch in late December.
> In a call with reporters Nov. 15, ULA Chief Executive Tory Bruno said that the Centaur upper stage for that mission, called Cert-1 by the company, arrived at Cape Canaveral on Nov. 13. Workers are now preparing the stage in a facility there before installing it atop the Vulcan booster.
---
https://arstechnica.com/space/2023/
> What's impressive, assuming SpaceX pulls off the repair in time for a launch attempt early Saturday, is this would be another example of the speed of progress at Starbase, located on a remote stretch of the Texas Gulf Coast east of Brownsville, just a few miles north of the US-Mexico border.
>Within a few hours of making the decision to replace the part near the top of the Super Heavy booster stage, SpaceX's ground crew detached the bullet-shaped Starship vehicle, itself some 15 stories tall, from the top of the rocket below. SpaceX uses the Starship name for both the upper stage of the rocket and the entire launch vehicle.
> Electric actuators drive the grid fins, providing the power to pivot and turn them as they receive split-second inputs from the booster's guidance system. The component SpaceX will replace is apparently one of these actuators.

Here’s why SpaceX really needed to change out that part on Starship
---
https://arstechnica.com/space/2023/
> Grid fins have been essential to the landing of 230 rockets.
> Here's an explanation of why grid fins are so important to the rocket's flight—or, more precisely, its landing.
> SpaceX had been attempting to land its rockets vertically in flight since 2013 and over the course of eight missions had gathered data about how best to orient the first stage during its reentry, when to fire its engines to slow the vehicle down, and how to steer it toward a desired location on the ground.
> Finally, by flight 14 of the rocket, they felt like they had put it all together. At least to the point where they could credibly make an attempt to land on a barge, recently christened Just Read the Instructions.
>One critical change had been the addition of four "grid fins," each measuring about 5 feet long (1.5 meters) and 4 feet wide (1.2 meters). These allowed for much better steering of the vehicle through the atmosphere in place of small thrusters. The grid fins, originally developed by the Soviet Union half a century earlier as control surfaces for intercontinental ballistic missiles, could be rotated up to 20 degrees and worked well on the big rocket.
> As the first stage descended through the atmosphere, the grid fins did their job, right up until the moment that the rocket neared the drone ship. Then the vehicle ran out of the hydraulic fluid essential to powering the movement of the fins. As a result, the rocket struck one edge of Just Read the Instructions and then raced across the drone ship before the fiery conflagration fell into the ocean.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvi
> The grid fin problem was corrected by switching from an open-loop hydraulic system to a closed-loop one. This not-insignificant change was made in a couple of weeks, ahead of the next launch of the Falcon 9 rocket on February 11. Later that year, after addressing more challenges, SpaceX would finally land its first Falcon 9 rocket. The company has since landed 230 rockets, which is many multiples of the number of rockets launched by all other US companies in the eight years since.
> The fins are larger on Super Heavy, of course. But there's also another difference. The Falcon 9 first stage tucks its grid fins down during launch, minimizing atmospheric drag on the way up through Earth's atmosphere. Super Heavy's grid fins, rather, are fixed in an outward position.
> However, the grid fin still needs to be moved in pitch, yaw, and roll to steer the rocket. For Super Heavy, the company adopted an electronic steering system—no hydraulic fluid here—to adjust the fins. This relies on an actuator to transfer this electric power and move the fin.
>SpaceX won't be attempting to land Super Heavy back at the Starbase launch site for this mission, but they sure would like to make a controlled descent into the ocean. So the faulty actuator had to be swapped out.

What NASA wants to see from SpaceX’s second Starship test flight
A successful Starship test flight would unlock a roadmap to even bigger tests.
--
https://arstechnica.com/space/2023/
> NASA managers are in South Texas this weekend as SpaceX prepares to launch its second full-sized Starship rocket. If the rocket flies perfectly, it will unlock additional tests beginning as soon as next year to prove that SpaceX can transfer hundreds of tons of super-chilled methane and liquid oxygen between two spaceships in orbit.
> Depending on who you ask, SpaceX may need to launch a dozen or more refueling tankers to fill up the methane and liquid oxygen tanks on the Starship lunar lander, which will have emptied its tanks just to get into low-Earth orbit following launch on top of a Super Heavy booster. The Starship lander will use this fuel to boost itself out of low-Earth orbit toward the Moon, descend to the lunar surface with astronauts, and climb back into space to deliver the crew to their Earth return vehicle—an Orion spacecraft.
> "Tomorrow is a test and we’re going to learn a lot either way," Lisa Watson-Morgan, who manages NASA's Human Landing System program, told Ars in an interview this week. "We’d love to see it go off perfectly, but frankly, if it doesn’t, it’s still going to be a great learning event, and it still will give us progression on the schedule for the different flight tests, and then we’ll know the areas we need to more deeply penetrate.”
> "The Starship that will be tested (Saturday) is clearly not as mature as the Human Landing System Starship that we will eventually have," Watson-Morgan said. "It is a precursor or early demonstration."

> There is a roadmap for SpaceX to quickly mature Starship, introducing new technology and capabilities over a series of test flights set to run through 2024. The big priorities for Starship are to move forward with iterating the design to support NASA's lunar lander needs and to start deploying new-generation Starlink Internet satellites, allowing SpaceX to grow the broadband network significantly faster than possible with its existing Falcon 9 rockets.
> "All the engineering disciplines, all the functional systems that you would expect, the NASA team gets insight into that and then from that we can see how their system, their design and development, how it’s maturing," Watson-Morgan said. "We do provide feedback and our experience base if we see things."
> At least five of the booster's 33 Raptor engines failed on the first Starship test flight earlier this year. After analyzing data from that flight, engineers discovered there were fuel leaks that led to fires in the booster engine compartment. The Raptor engines, each burning methane fuel and producing about a half-million pounds of thrust, need to be a lot more reliable for SpaceX to move on to in-orbit refueling tests and Starlink launches using Starship, not to mention meeting NASA's stringent safety standards for astronauts.
> "We do anticipate the Raptor engines will perform better for this test," Watson-Morgan told Ars. The engines on the next Starship test flight are a mixture of first- and second-generation Raptors, whereas the first launch in April primarily used the older engine model.

quite a long interview intersped in this article
> "By the time of the Human Landing System Starship, we will be on a much later generation of Raptor, thereby having the predictability of the engines that is required for human-rating of the Starship itself," Watson-Morgan said.
> The depot will have consumed its original supply of 1,200 metric tons (or more) of propellant just to get into orbit. The Starship tankers will substitute extra fuel capacity for the ability to carry 150 metric tons, or more, of cargo to low-Earth orbit, allowing each tanker to dock with the depot and gradually fill its tanks.
> How quickly will cryogenic methane and liquid oxygen boil off in orbit? This is not as easy to know until SpaceX gathers data on the thermal behavior of these liquids, each stored hundreds of degrees below zero, after loitering for weeks to months in space. During this time, the Starship depot will be exposed to extreme temperature swings as it flies between the day and night side of Earth. Small temperature fluctuations inside the tanks can cause methane and liquid oxygen to boil off, or transition from a liquid to a gas, and be lost.
> NASA and SpaceX engineers are working together to analyze "things like ullage, for tank collapse, for slosh, for how the fluids should go from one ship to the other, the guidance navigation and control, how the two ships are going to hold steady," Watson-Morgan said. "So we are working hand in hand with them, and our experts are performing independent analysis that we’re giving to SpaceX."
> "We're interested in the science that comes from that, and later on next year, we anticipate a propellant transfer demonstration [between two Starships]," Watson-Morgan said. "That’s really when we start maturing the systems, and when it really gets exciting for HLS, because those are the building blocks that we need and, frankly, it’s never been done successfully in orbit."

> It's only after a propellant transfer demonstration that SpaceX and NASA can know the answers to some of the long-simmering questions about the Starship lander. One of those questions is the number of tanker launches SpaceX will need just to enable a single Artemis landing mission.
>“We have a general idea, but I’m reluctant to say exactly what that is because SpaceX is still designing Starship and the booster and the fleet—the tankers and the depot," Watson-Morgan said. “That’s why we really need, next year, the propellant transfer demonstration test because that will then help us say, 'OK, we see the boil-off, we see the sizing, we see how long it takes to transfer this fluid.'"
> Watson-Morgan suggested the range in the number of Starship tanker flights for a single Artemis mission could be in the "high single digits to the low double digits." Elon Musk, SpaceX's founder and CEO, has suggested the company is looking at expanding Starship's capacity with larger propellant tanks. This could help reduce the number of tanker flights.
high single digits to low double digits from Watson-Morgan, Lakiesha gives the retarded high teen number
> Lakiesha Hawkins, deputy associate administrator for NASA's Moon to Mars program office, provided a different number of tanker flights Friday in a meeting of the NASA Advisory Council's human exploration and operations committee. Hawkins suggested SpaceX will need launches somewhere in the "high teens" for an Artemis landing mission, with those flights lifting off from Texas and Florida about once every six days.
>“In order to be able to meet the schedule that is required, as well as managing boil-off and so forth with the fuel, there’s going to be a rapid succession of launches with fuel," Hawkins said, adding that this approach is "complex and challenging."

> The Starship depot will linger in low-Earth orbit as tankers arrive one by one. Then, once the Starship lander reaches its orbit around the Moon, it will have to wait for arrival of astronauts flying from Earth on NASA's Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule.
>"So there’s that orchestration," Watson-Morgan said. "That’s why I say it’s dependent on many things, and right now we’re really just focusing on getting to orbit and fully understanding the fluid dynamics associated with the prop transfer, which will be an amazing engineering feat and one that hasn’t been done yet.
> "Depending on how all that goes, then we’ll determine the right steps for the uncrewed demo and move forward from there," she said. SpaceX and NASA plan to launch a Starship to the Moon for an unpiloted end-to-end demonstration before committing to use Starship for the crew lunar landing on the Artemis III mission.
as I suspected, the doomers on X btfo once again, launch it then iterate on the tanker, just like SpaceX always does
no random side missions

btw somewhat related to this is why haven't they cancelled the whole thing? eager space made a video about it recently and the answer is: a large part of the revenue/price money of the programme will only be given after astronauts are successfully launched into orbit at about 90 mil per astronaut
there is going to be 6 launches and then some additional cash for some milestones and he estimated the total revenue would be 2.3-2.9 billion
so as long as the cost to finish the programme into a state costs them less than 2 bil from this point on, it makes financial sense to just finish it
otherwise they lose that 2.5bil
additionally the ISS might be kept alive past 2030 and there are the private stations coming online hopefully at some point and Starliner can perhaps get some more business from those

Multitude of things
Engines failed right after ignition and aft engine bay fires ultimately caused more engines to shutdown after electrical linkages were severed.
The hydraulics where also reported to have outright failed and the booster lost control.
The biggest issue was the FTS failed to cause a timely destruction of the rocket.

It's been said in constructing a competetive multi player mmos that a setup involving three factions always results in a well balanced and fun experience because the weaker ones always end up uniting to balance out if one gets too powerful.
I suggest the founding of a new faction to balance out the two /sfg/ factions to make for a more enjoyable /sfg/ experience

A twitterfag can always delete their account and make a new one. You can't exactly unfuck the thread after the tourists arrive. Assymetric risk. I recommend everyone relax and enjoy a nice launch.

more videos = good channel
this is unironically how the yt algorithm promotes random videos, if a channel is very active
