๐๏ธ ๐งต Maya vs Blender
Anonymous at Wed, 30 Oct 2024 22:10:15 UTC No. 1000485
Alright fellow chuds. I'm sick of Blender. Noteably the rigging and 2 fps animating aspect of it since it was always like that. I need to main a new software where I can do my general things in including rigging, animation, possibly hair aswell.
I've heard Maya trumps in those aspects and runs smoothly. Is it worth learning and maining it? Can it do haircards with that xgen shit it has?
The poly modeling looks shittier than in Blender though. Is it manageable?

Im a blender fag, but I've used Maya in the old studio I worked with.
Maya is better in everything except poly modelling, it's not bad, but I prefer blender

Blender canโt do its actual job of poly modeling. Something always happens to the model because of capabilities or limitations.

No anon, triangle shaped model is not a real reason to use Blender. Everytime someone does it the entire model disintegrates like those retro special effects from movies.

yup
slower pace so moves tend to be more measured
multicult is nicer to use than the separate knife+edge loop tools
snapping to other elements is also more fun than vanilla blender (machinetools in blender is better tho)
maya modelling is when you're older, confident in your abilities, don't need more than a few basic tools, and don't need to make it look like you're playing competitive starcraft
just make a good model the first time ez

i tried to model in maya 2025 for a while then switched back to blender
maya controls are more intuitive if you're a mouse user, you don't have to leave the mouse or move your hands too far to use basic tools like inset, the pie menu has most of the features you'll need, most tools are right in your face, you don't have to search through submenus
the pivot is superior to blender's 3d cursor, you can move it like an object and snap it around quite easily, if you wanted to change your object origin you wouldn't have to select the vertex you want first then press shift+s to bring the pie menu then move your mouse to the option you want then go back to object mode then right click, or if you're old school shift+ctrl+alt+c THEN you click origin to 3d cursor
some tools like weld tool work far better than the one in blender, you select it then click the vertex you want and just move it to the other vertex and that's it, in blender i have to select both vertices in order and then press m and go through a menu before merging them
and in 2.7 you had to press ctrl as well, too many keys for no good reason
most of the things i liked are like this, good design choices and qol features
the downsides though is that the modeling itself is pretty basic
it takes a lot of time to boot up
the modifiers are mostly useless and can't be used to model non-destructively like in blender
booleans don't work, and they kept removing the material i had whenever i applied them, no idea if that's how maya works or if it's a bug or what
also no carver addon
undo doesn't work that well and it slows down the program with time, you'll have to delete history every while
blender hotkeys are unintuitive but if you're used to them you'll be far faster than any maya user, i realized this after i had to re-learn blender, i became way faster, and more precise too, using mouse is simply not that fast.
i didn't try animation, but blender is FAR better for modeling, so use them both

I always end up enabling gizmos in blender anyway, I don't understand how can blendlets stand the retarded shortcuts all over the keyboard

I use Blender, I can use the hotkeys. it just werks...for me

paid software > free software
ONLY exception, and this is for casual use (ONLY?), LibreOffice. Other than that, paid software always better, everywhere.
If you cannot afford to buy your tools,
consumer will not be able to afford your art.

Blender is free, Maya is $400 to rent for a year. Maybe a little less if you have a discount coupon.
