Hey everyone, I could use some advice. I'm 29 and currently stuck in a soul-draining 9-5 remote job, so I'm looking to pick up a new hobby for the weekends. I've been considering diving into 3D modeling, with the ultimate goal of joining a creative community and making new friends. One of my specific goals is to create a 3D render of this character, then resin print and paint it to test my skills. I'm aiming to achieve this by the end of March 2025. With the right resources and dedication, do you think this goal is realistic, or am I too old for it and it would be better to just commission a professional to do this?

be careful, you're trying to pick up 3 hobbies at once

Idk, if this is the main thing you're looking for, it can be tricky. I'm into this for like 9 months, I can tell it feels like there is no unified 3dcg community. There are 3d-adjacent communities in various fields, like older games modding/mapping communities, some anime-related communities like mmd or koikatsu, but general 3dcg doesn't really have anything like this, it's too broad. Blender discord/subreddit is mostly random noobs asking basic bitch questions, it doesn't feel like there is some unity in there. Coming from programming, there you have active comunities centered around specific programming languages, like Rust or Haskall or whatever. There is nonstop dedicated discussion about specifics of language, upcoming features, best ways to do shit, etc. In 3dcg, communities centered around specific software don't feel the same. This whole board is more dead than a single "daily programming thread" in /g/ for example. 3dcg is very fun field on its own, I enjoy it way more than programming, but it's probably not the best choice in terms of community and making new friends. For that, you'd better look for something more specific, aimed at particular fandom or anime specific shit like mmd/koikatsu.

everything is possible with the right shortcuts. since anime girls are generic youd start out with vroid studio, then youd learn marvelous designer for clothing. you might be able to pick up marvelous designer and vroid studio within that time frame and learn some basic blender shortcuts. also use meshmixer to make the model solid so you can 3d print it.
to master the full scope of 3d animation and sculpting and what not would take you 5 years or more however.

How much time should I dedicate to a project like this?

again it depends on the shortcuts you take. making an anime face is a month or two, the hair be 3 months... if you dont want to use marvelous designer for the clothes or use a hair plugin and start out with the blender cube then which is what pigheaded people do yes itll take you like 3 years realistically cause youll have to try and fail just to get the body proportions right and try and fail at sculpting and knowing when and when not to sculpt. another 2 if you want to do animations and texturing from there but you said youre interested in 3d printing.

If you spend 5 minutes a day?
Anyway, I'm not sure if you're saying the face takes that long or learning to do it from zero background?
In that case how would you estimate time it takes when you're already experienced?

If you're going into modeling for gamedev the indie community is huge.
