what softwares were used by the industry in that time? I'd like to try to make old styled 3D like pic related

I think they used clay and rocks and shit like that. 3d modeling is pretty new so they didn't have the tools we have now

Cel shading plugins like ' Illustrate! ' where used around that era.
You are much better off using contemporary tools as NPR styles of shading has become a lot easier to pull off with modern tools.
Even transported to back then I'd use 'inverted hull' method over illustrate! any day of the week if I only had known about it at the time.
Don't do what you think you're gonna do, even if you could find it it is horrible software by today's standard.

Before there was Maya, there was Modo. You could probably recreate this style with shading tho

It was model in 3DMAX.
You did it with SubDivision modeling.
You used ZBrush for sculpts.
And none of the information you want to learns bout this subject really survives today because it's out of date.

Why did they use zbrush to sculpt cartoon styled models? Seems like overkill when you can use maya and model that.
