🧵 "Thank you, Blender"
Anonymous at Mon, 3 Mar 2025 06:45:09 UTC No. 1008528
Great, that's all that the big-headed Blender Foundation needed, even more praise and ego stroking (the animated Oscar winner thanked them).
So now they can keep investing their precious open-source funding that so many other FOSS projects thirst for, into useless stuff like the VSE (video sequence editor) that will never compete with proprietary or even specialized solutions, while somehow ignoring the many quality-of-life and useful ideas available in rightclickselect or in the ACTUAL CODE from pull-requests that people send them with useful additions, stuff that they refuse to add / ignore and let rot because they don't have to create a competitive product that sells, as it's already funded.
Blender gets to become this bloaty sluggish package that only "looks good" because there's no competition. There is no other 3D DCC package, and even if someone tried to create one they'd be discouraged from evangelist comments like "but Blender already exists".
But hey look, we changed the version number to 4. Hooray, that's progress, right?
Thank you, Blender?
More like get your shit together, Blender.

You mean like every Disney, Dreamworks, anime and WB film who also wins these awards every year. Blender didn’t help make the movie, they had to create custom code on everything, 5 million dollars in spending and they only showed it on selected areas. The award is a sham a false narrative about blender. They should not have been nominated.

Idk how much of these fund goes to the VSE, every user has his priorities, retopology tools, texture paint, parametrical modeling, SDF, better sculpt tools etc... you have to understand that blender isn't made for the users, blender is made for the Blender studio and they do what they need for their little projects, this year they are doing a ""game""" in Godot, 2 shorts and a character project, whatever that is, so expect more focus on what they need for these things, you could add the movie from the Dillongoo studio that is paying the npr mode.
Yes I would like to have all the sculpt shit that Dobarro or Eagar did and it is unfinished, the bevel node that was announced 3 years ago, more work in the SDF nodes that have been in experimental more than a year and lots of other things...

>they had to create custom code on everything
According to the director they used a bunch of addons, some of them from the Blender market and that's it: AnimAide, Anim Toolbox, Rig Picker, Copy Global Transform, F Curve Helper and the Asset Library addon. anyhow it is a small movie with few complex scenes, it is basically 5 animals in a boat, in the trailer you can see some boid simulations with fishes and insects, a crowd simulation with deers and the water and physic effects ....

This is clearly a paid project by Warner Bros. who killed a better cartoon movie and other movies for their awards.

this is how you know no artistry was involved.
do you ever see anyone else going up there and being like
>thank you autodesk maya
>thank you adobe premiere
>thank you avid pro tools
>thank you foundy nuke
no; because the tools are just a means to an end
not here though, because it's about promoting the cult, not about expression

Alias|Wavefront was awarded an Oscar in 2003, employees previously were honored by the Academy for achievements in the Scientific and Technical category too.
Anyhow no mayor studio (Disney/Pixar, Illumination, Warner, Dreamworks etc..) funds Blender, the only ones putting money there are Studio Kara.

the oscars regularly hands out awards for technical achievements. this is not one of those awards; the blender foundation isn't winning an award.

Studio Kara abandoned Blender, their YouTube videos showed different 3D software and animations. Not once did they showcase Blender.

That was during their blender session and testing. They never mentioned blender or use it ever again. 2 years after the video and news, nothing.

Seems very unlikely, plus we don’t exactly have any videos from them to show otherwise.

>blender is made for the Blender studio and they do what they need for their little projects
They always cheat and use a different branch, it's never the latest stable release.
Once they're done, not all the additions make it to trunk.
I would really like to see a competitor.
There was going to be the Wizart DCC release in open-source form (they said the software was used to make the Netflix movie Secret Magic Control Agency), but they changed it to a free tier & subscription tiers instead, and rebranded:
https://shapefx.app/
And anyway, their head of R&D said in an article that "Our artists have increasingly begun to use Blender professionally in their 3D modeling tasks, so we are adding Blender support to our production processes".
In other news, MODO is dead:

Oh really?
The very first version of Blender, released at no cost, was indeed a work of generosity. Nobody knew about it, so it was a gift.
But now there's a dev fund. Try erasing it, see how many developers stick around :)
I'm sure any "ideas man" is gonna run out of ideas. No more fancy photo studio profile pictures either, oh no. How else are they gonna look important now while mis-tagging bug reports and disabling API access, instead of adding more useful things that actually help people?
