NGL, it did it for me as well. I need to put another 6 months into my project after watching this, it seems like. Okay, it for sure doesn't help that I'm comparing my realtime renders with these offlines ones, but still. The lighting in a bunch of those is out of this world. How the fuck are they doing it...

Anonymous No. 833091

I'm guessing the more elaborate scenes have a lot of elements from people's old personal projects and such. Doesn't make them any less impressive though - really great stuff in there.

If it helps to destroy your confidence further...there are a couple of Eevee and UE4 renders among them.
>How the fuck are they doing it...
They all spent 18 years of combined time working on all the entries.
That's an average of 64 hours per project.
Some of those in the top 100 said they worked like 4 weeks non-stop every day on their project.
And of course they where allowed to use assets they made before or bought of the internet.

if anything, his videos gave me more inspiration and drive to want to create things at that level. it's amazing to see what some relatively average, normal people are capable of making with a little bit of creativity and the invested time into whatever programs they took well to. as harsh as it is, you probably won't be the best. but never the less, that shouldn't matter. do the best that you can do, and keep pushing yourself to make your renders better and better. if you're passionate about it, be proud of your work and it'll carry you to greatness, op

Well said, I fully agree. These works should inspire, not intimidate anyone. None of these artists got their skills overnight, we should all strive to put in the work, improve and reach our full creative capacity.
It was a really entertaining watch.

To me, it usually both inspires and depresses. I searched a few of those artists and they were students, younger than me by X years. That was kinda depressing. But it always pushes me to go further with my own work as well, so yeah. But personally, me being kinda pessimistic, I don't go out of my way to constantly browse through ArtStation because those bad feelings outweigh good ones. I'm happier and perform better if I just focus on my own stuff, while occasionally comparing it with top tier stuff to make sure I'm going in the right direction.

confidence boosting more than anything.
quite a few of those were... kind of meh, the good ones were a fantastic mix between well thought out ideas and creative ways to achieve them my favorite one being the stop motion one with the hands, but beyond that, my creativity is higher than many of these people and my skill... it just needs to catch up which won't be too hard.

exactly, you have to decide what's important and what's going to change, if its a static thing, render it once and have that image move.

also see parallax effect in video games before you could really render it all real time.

yeah these were actually pretty depressing. like, any of those artists could have dropped dead in the middle of the project and been replaced by any of the other ones and nobody would know the difference. this would be much harder if not impossible with 2d artists or musicians or writers. 3d is the medium of nameless interchangeable drones.

I think it's because when they look at what's there, they can't even imagine what they would do with it.

my understanding is they were given an animation that kind of looks jittery, a camera position so these all kind of flow together, a mandate for a big thing in the background toward the right, and told to make what ever they wanted. (I wrote this before seeing what they were given to work with as a necessity)

ill stand by the hands down best one of these was 7:52, it went well with the jittery movement, and probably is one of the few that did not smoothly animate everything else making the movement of the character look so out of place in the scene.

Im catching some mistakes in alot of these, there was a object with water in the background, but the made the water fall around 100 times faster than it should have and in a big clump, it's kind of fun looking at this a second time and nit picking (after seeing what they were given to work with, its possible they didn't change the position of the sphere and it was a lot lower and closer then it would seem, still makes what they did a mistake for not thinking of a way to anticipate the issue). a lot of these kind of feel like they build the scenery first and then figured out what to do with the animation second. but the best ones to me are all ones where i'm just stumped on how a mind even thought of doing that, but sadly there are very few of those. a lot of the ones where it where they were fighting wind was a great choice for the jittery animation (looking at the animaton, it was smooth, the fuck were so many of them jittery for but had smooth animation for everything else), but most of the themes for that were kind of standard 'first thing that pops into your head' kind of things.

im a bit tainted due to watching the video, so i cant say for certain what I would have done, but my usual thought process and sketches, it wouldn't have been generic or formless monster
