🧵 Maya; what is it good for and what is it not?
Anonymous at Thu, 1 Jul 2021 00:30:58 UTC No. 836300
I at least know it’s good for animation, but I’m unsure as to how good it is at basic modeling or hard surface modeling.
Anonymous at Thu, 1 Jul 2021 00:41:07 UTC No. 836303
Average to good, it's not the best but it's what people use in film because it's gonna end out in maya anyway and everything needs to be grouped and parented ready for animation and what not. Max and probably modo beat it for pure poly modelling.
Maya has very good retopology and UV tools though.

Would I be gay If I preferred blender over maya when it comes to to modeling? I’ll still use maya for curves and nurbs, but the modifiers in blender are much more useful for me

I am in the same boat, but if you call me gay I rip your balls out and feed them to the sharks.
Blender is a little faster than Maya for modelling (IMHO) and the modifiers are very helpful. Unfortunately if you doing complex SubD modelling sooner or later Blender shits the bed. Same with complex scenes. Don't get me started on the grouping and parenting.
I refuse to animate in Blender (cause its absolutely shit) same as with anything related to simulations or hair.
So I use both, usually I start with Blender and finish with Maya. Best of both worlds.
That's the way.

yes.
just need to remember one golden rule which is if you use vanilla toolset, you HAVE to clear your history every now and then or it WILL shit itself.

i never worked with maya, max and blender only, but from my experience wanting to stick with blender is all about habits and your laziness to let go of bad ones. blender itself objectively has no advantages and once you learn the superior software, you're not going to miss it. switching just means a few days of learning a slightly different workflow/tools and changing hotkeys around.
blender is for finding out whether or not 3d CG generally is for you or not. once you've made your decision it's time to move on.

I've used maya for 6+ years and IMO Maya's much better for hard surface modeling. Mayas system for textures sucks compared to Blender. Blender is much easier to go from photo to model to render. Blender also does a much better simulation system than Maya IMO but I've heard others argue that. Maya is hands down the best for rigging and animation though.

I am animating in blender myself, but never touched Maya. Can you tell what tools Maya has and Blender lacks (related to character animation and rigging)

Blender is much better at modeling than Maya. If you consider switching, switch to Max for that.

I think it is partially that, but there are also many other reasons as to why I prefer blender.
Firstly, many of the modifiers in blender are too useful to give up. The array and mirror modifier in particular are, in my eyes, a major advantage that blender has in terms of modeling. You can set up procedural systems and work on things like revolver cylinders where the cylinder is made up of 6 rotated segments. In maya, to my knowledge, in order to know what the revolver cylinder would look like when it's complete, you have to select the parts, copy, and rotate.
Another thing I prefer is blender's options on selection. You can select loops, guidelines, select the inside and outside of an edge, and so much more. I am sure that maya has similar options, but from my experience with trying to use it's equivalent of proportional editing, it was just too damn convoluted.
you can't even extrude vertexes in maya

all of the things you mentioned are there, in a superior version, in 3ds max. i have no idea why you're focused on maya specifically for poly-modeling, as that's not what it's focused on in the first place (3ds max is).

It's good for extending with custom functionality and functionality that replaces the garbage it ships with, until you find a bug in the API or have to interact with the DAG in any way and then you're totally fucked.
It's not good for fast evaluation.
Anonymous at Sat, 3 Jul 2021 08:55:48 UTC No. 836753
It's good for everything, it's fucking used by pros. Retards here can't even complete one single render and ask themselves if the software is at fault. No you just suck. Pick one and go practice your donut.
>I’m unsure as to how good it is at basic modeling or hard surface modeling.
Now i'm not sure if this is bait or you're serious.

No it would be normal. Blender is way better than maya for modeling. Poly modeling is actually Blender's greatest strength. They're fixing the performances issues with 3.0 so subD modeling is much more pleasant, even with the current beta.
