I just learned about this. Allegorithmic filled a bunch of patents on procedural texture generation [https://www.google.com/search?hl=e
Could these patents be the reason behind the lack of competitors to Substance? Are we fucked until they expire?

The patents aren't the reason. There is little competition because the market for entertainment oriented 3d software is tiny, most established companies that aren't Adobe or Autodesk have revenues in the single or double digit millions, there's no more pie to go around.

I haven't had time to read the application, but at a glance it's probably for FX maps, if that's the case, who cares.

Yeah, from glancing over them they seem focused on FX-Maps.

nigga these patents don't matter, the very reason substance got to top was precisely because they weren't adobe, they were a bunch of independent frogs making affordable product. I say affordable because mari is infinitely better from a tech standpoint, but their prices are fucked.
now it doesn't matter, they aren't independent now, they aren't affordable, they aren't even good, you just watch how adobe will fuck this shit up, they won't stay standard for long, they already market this new rebranded substance 3d shit to vapid latte covered dick choking mac "designer" vermin who never heard about 3dcg ever before, they aint us, we need different feature set.
quixel/3dcoat/whoever the fuck will take up the flag, if they don't then we always have last best sp2020.

No, now Deep learning procedural textures is moving very very fast.

Nothing since >>836567 is right it seems to be just about their useless fx maps node which can be emulated with ease by more capable node based software like Houdini.
Even Blender had texture nodes in 2009, it would have been impossible to get a patent on those in 2013.

Why useless? Aren't FX-Maps the base for most of Designer and Painter?

FX-Maps are useless the instant custom programmable nodes are allowed because they're nothing more than a very tedious and complicated way to customize a node using more nodes.

They aren't useless, they just aren't necessary for procedural texturing. In fact the implementation of the industry standard noises through FX maps are lacking compared to the implementations in other software. Maybe that isn't the ideal use case for FX maps, but it's so underwhelming I didn't see the need for further investigation.
