meh pc = long ass render times. xgen seems to hammer my pc much more than blender's dinky particle system. i'd need to wait even longer between renders to see where I'm at and make adjustments

It's basically the same reason why most beginner artists start out drawing goofy eyes, mouths and stuff. Most start out drawing "standard shapes" for face/body parts they sort of have in mind instead of looking at things analytically and trying to emulate what they actually see. It's even worse if they start out trying to do go the stylized way before getting the basics down first.
The furry artists that impress you most likely studied/practiced actual human and animal anatomy for quite a while already and are able to bring it all together well.
That being said OP is far from being really bad and is actually quite pleasing to look at, especially his update >>837543. If he'll keep up and stays willing to better his skills, he'll improve further, no doubt. There are actual abominations, especially in the 3D field if you take a quick look around places like FA or DA.
