Can someone experienced or even novice explain to me what made this look so horrible?

The girls all acted in a green-screen background, everything else is CG or raw footage.
The dude who composed the scene is unbelievable incompetent.

the acting is horrible, the green screen looks like shit, and that's not how the bodies work in a explosion, the whole physics in the movie are retarded.

Anonymous No. 840601

These movies are storyboarded and directed in pre vis, and all the vfx and compositing is outsourced to third world companies.
The first unit team just lazily shuffled the actresses through the green screen process.

Technically it looks fine. But the explosion and the pressure wave are physically completely wrong. In real life, the hot gases would move far faster than your body. You would be entirely engulfed by them before the explosion managed to instil any momentum on you. In fact, an explosion that small would probably not impart much momentum on you in any case. So what would happen is that the explosion would occlude your body, and a while later your burning and screaming body might possibly drop back into view outside the gas cloud. Also, your hair and clothes would start moving far faster than your body. Now it just looks like you're tethered to something and physically janked away just before the explosion.

Marvel has a boner for single light sources so they can do more work in post. That shot only matches 1 studio light 1 one environment light. So youre missing all the blue overcast tones etc.

The first major thing that stands out to me is that the lighting of the scene is different to the lighting of the characters.
Marvel should have known about this before shooting the scene.
This is what causes the major disconnect between the characters and the environment.
If the scene had more outdoor oriented lighting (as others have already stated), the scene would look much better.
The physics of the explosions could have also been better done although, that may have just been a fault of the writers' incompetence rather than any cinematography errors.

It absolutely does. /tv/ doesn't have a technical/filmmaking thread ever and there are zero boards here that deal with filmmaking. The shot is all vfx and I would argue that we need to break down more things here. This board fills many different hats that 3D is involved in.

People notice physics mistakes INSTANTLY. Doesn't matter if they're cognizant or not, it's all instinctual. This is why most people don't believe NASA videos from space though they don't know why.

Top it all off, the shots are dumb. This looks terrible, and I normally think Marvel does a very acceptable job.

Yes and no and no and yes. There's always an excuse and there's always a deadline. There's always a budget excuse and there's always a budget excuse in general. I think they just cheapened out by giving it to a 3rd party across the seas (because the 3rd party bid on the lowest cost for the filmmakers--you have to remember that filmmakers are notoriously cheap as fuck even though it's a billion dollar budget) but I'm not going to lie and it's going to piss off everyone; the average audience who watches this could give a fuck less about the shot. The ones who do clearly work in the industry and care but in reality, when you have a deadline, you just pump out shit. The ones who really care either don't work in the industry and don't understand deadlines or they are so butthurt that a billion dollar industry just wants to pump out shit to the masses and as long as the shot is clear and conveys what the production department wants; no one else gives a fuck. And I say that in the nicest way possible. I'm willing to bet that the people in this thread complaining don't and have never had a real job in vfx and are too fucking dense and dumb to separate reality from filmmaking.

NASA videos are a meme at this point, bro.

People who cope always say "it looks weird because we don't know how zero G looks like therefore it's probably not fake". Yet the zero G plane ride in Russia looks completely different than allegedly zero G videos from NASA.

I have worked in vfx (on a few Marvel movies too) Marvel will change the scope of work in the final hours of the project, since the execs (who have the final say) will only really start paying attention and going to reviews during the last two months. Studios have more than enough time to make it look good (in my experience), but then it almost has to be done from scratch because they want to change the plate or some shit like that. The executives are the only ones to blame for shit like this (specifically Victoria Alonso)

The lighting of the CG background doesn't match the the live action footage. The shot 2 seconds in with the chick on top of a building was, for some mindboggling reason filmed with darker lighting that the shot of the first bitch in the smoke-filled street. (I have no idea who these characters are, I haven't watched a marvel movie since the mid 2000's)

Are you telling me that this is from one of their recent movies? The Boys looks 10x better than this.
