>low res mesh - brush moves smoothly
>your paint will look jagged/pixelated as fuck
>enough dense mesh (not even really high density, just enough) to make paint look decent
>NOW YOU CAN'T PAINT BECAUSE YOUR BRUSH BARELY MOVES ANYMORE
Vertex paint mode is basically useless in Blender.
You can give your flat animus some general body color but that's it.

Oh wait, just realized that this one rogue dev introduced some new vertex painting mode inside the sculpting mode and guess what? It's actually smooth as butter even at over 2m while the original vertex paint struggled above 200k. Even fucking big brush smearing.
I'm actually impressed. Hope they will replace the shitty old mode with that new one.

Experimental in the 3.0 alpha, it doesn't have multires support but he did that a year ago, he didn't ported the clone brush from the old vertex paint mode neither.
