Is this guy fucking stupid? He hit the jackpot with his donut/anvil series. Teaching vapid normie hobbyists how to use Blender proved to be a potential gold mine for him. Why the fuck would he stop? Who would throw that potential away? Literally could have just made tutorials for ANYTHING and made bank for years and years.

Anonymous No. 841081

he just did a render engine comparison series and is entertaining on twitter almost daily - he is still winning

interviews and vlogs = almost no effort

I unfollowed when he started with the NFT nonsense.

Youtube doesn't pay as much anymore as it did just a couple years ago.
He and many others are now switching priority from YT to some other income streams (his company in this case).
Putting tons of time into YT is literally wasting time and money.

Blender novice boom was from 2018-2020.
+ Indie Game & Game Modding scene
+ VR Headset hype
+ Blender upgrading to 2.8
+ Stay at home pandemic

New user flood is declining. Not as profitable to put out more learning videos. Majority of the people who came in during the flood are just going to listen to some podcast that talks about the current fad (NFTs) and then go back to jerking off.

Yeah he's gotten very lax and he does boring letsplays and reviews of other people's work. I've learned plenty of stuff from him in the past but there's a limit to how much knowledge people can pass on. At a certain point you need to just start reading the documentation and/or experimenting with tools yourself.

He's an ameteur.
Making money off tutorials isn't the same as actually making money from your art alone.
Take Youtube out of the equation, and he'd be bottom of the barrel and not making any money.
Just look at his artstation. It's all "competent" but none of it is actually good.

Photo textures (made by other people as well) are not art lol. Also he's 30+.

Anonymous No. 841952

there is artistry involved. He's not that old, you got proof?

Anonymous No. 841970

>>841952
I mean, we could also say there is artistry in everything we do, but you have to draw the line somewhere. The thread has been talking about his "art" such as complete scenes, and now you brought it down to how he's earning money from texture scans (which he probably doesn't even actually shoot personally).

It says he graduated in 2005 on his LinkedIn, I have no clue how schooling system works there but from what I quickly googled, that should probably be around 18 y.o. Do the math. Also I remember when I started watching his videos 4-5 years ago, and being surprised he is almost 30 because he seemed much younger.

Anonymous No. 842078

>>841948
This is a joke, right?
You can't possibly believe that any of that requires artistic knowledge, can you?
No one is that stupid.

At best, the most work involved is using the clone brush. You could train a monkey to do that.
Most likely, he doesn't even do that. Just pays a bunch of pajeets to do it while he gets the profit. I've got no doubt the dude has little to no involvement in the end product.

Having a company and being a millionaire are two completely different things. So unless you have data backing up what you say shut the fuck up.

I'm not hating on the guy, I actually have a huge respect for him, but there's no need to suck his cock and his fans have a point when it comes to the drop in quality for his content.

Anonymous No. 842150

>>842128
Perhaps the dude is a true artist at the core. I don't know about you but I would not wanna spend my life dealing with all the fallout from having a public persona that had to interface with an audience made up of humans.

Not everyone on this planet is motivated primarily by money. If I have enough to keep the lights on I much rather pursue something that captivates me than something that pays well.

>A lot of them are podcast type where you don't need to watch and can do something else because they're just telling you a story or something like that
>See they upload like twice a month at most
>All they do is read from a book or a wikipedia page or something else that only takes as long as the video is
>But still they only upload once or twice a month
>It's so fucking basic and simple that if you uploaded more you would get more exposure and therefore more views and therefore more followers and therefore more shekels
>See that Mr Ballen does exactly what I thought, uploading 3, 4, or 5 times every week
>Explodes in popularity
>See the more popular he gets the less uploads he makes
>Now at the start of his videos he mentions uploading 2 or 3 times every week

I'm not sure why they go full retard when they start hitting their peak.
It's like that tranny and xis bf who started to get popular on youtube, and making money from youtube was all xhe wanted to do. Then as soon as xe started to get popular they closed the channel and took up professional child molesting at the bf's mom's daycare instead. Pure retards.

Everyone is using Twitter though. I started posting some wips to try to gather some following, but I don't participate in any discussion nor do I tryhard. Managed to get myself full 19 followers lol, and that is after having multiple posts retweeted by Substance, ArtStation and the like. Nobody gives a shit to take a look at an OP, but oh well.

Anonymous No. 843231

Hold on now Anon. You are paying for your textures right?

Anonymous No. 843242

>>843231
I had a Quixel sub for a few months that I didn't pay for from a gig (client opted to pay for it), and I still have a fuckton of points since they kept rolling over and I didn't use it very much.

The sub has been done for like a year, but I still have like 300 points or so. Which is more than enough to grab whatever I need if a case arises.
Pair that with Mixer and I'm pretty set.
Even then, I made-do with CC0 Textures, or if I really needed to, just made my own in Substance since I had a student license without an expiry (at least until Jewdobe got involved).

I think the only thing I grabbed from Poliigon or whatever was the roads or something, and even then they were free since a client paid for those as well. They weren't very good, and looked pretty ugly when tiled.

Anonymous No. 843307

>Mixer is horrible
Oh, you're not wrong.
Believe me, it's pretty shit at times. But the quick integration with Quixel Bridge where I grab most of the Megascans stuff, is really what's important. Just clicking once to import a Megascans material into it is convenient.

I mainly just use Mixer to do it's namesake and mix 2 or more textures together. Like if I need dirt in the grout-lines of a tile texture, or some puddles in mud, or a road. For simple shit like that it does the job just fine.
I don't know if you can do much else in the program, but I'd say it'd be pretty retarded to use it as a replacement to things like Substance Designer/Painter (if that's possible). Hell Alchemist was a better too, but I lost my Substance License when Adobe got involved. Piracy is an option, but honestly I don't need it that much right now, and I'd rather wait till the transitional period is over.
