Is this true? I went into 3d because I wanted to make my own waifu figure sculpts but now some professionals are saying that it isn't allowed.

They have a point though, just because you don't like them (which is totally fine btw, I too, don't) that doesn't make their argument null and void.
If you want to get a job in the industry as a modeller, this advice is spot on, because if you work in production you will not design the stuff you'll model.
Same applies for texture artists and environment artists as well as other production "artists" (more like production monkeys).
You will have to be able to realize a concept that somebody else did.
That is what you will be judged and hired for - nothing else. Are you able too or not?

Doing concepts is not your job and nobody cares about your shitty concepts which inevitably will turn into shitty models.
Because lets face it, most people are not great at it. Concept and design is a complete different discipline that needs lot of education/dedicated work and you should only put it in your portfolio if you actually want to work in an job where it is needed or/and if you can pull it off.
They rightfully made this argument in order to stop beginners from wasting their time and doing something that is often detrimental to their success. Dunning Kruger, bitches.
If however you don't want an industry monkey job, or you are not a bloody beginner who knows what he is doing then this argument makes not much sense.
Context matters.

these mumbling faggots are correct that you shouldn't really try to be a great concept artist and a great 3D modeler unless you're exceptionally talented, but if you're a 3D artist, you're still a damn artist and you should know how to draw and design stuff competently

Anonymous No. 841640

why would you need to know how to draw when you get perspective etc for free in any 3d dcc?

create art in a vacuum, who cares what you do. Just make what you feel like. If you are in for yourself. If you do it for the money, it should be obvious that you have to make other people waifus.

Anonymous No. 841707

I don't understand this, what are you supposed to do then if you want to design your own portfolio? make bad copies of other models or what?

Anonymous No. 841727

If you want an industry job, your best bet is for your portfolio to be be of models of established characters from billion dollar western IP's. When they look at your portfolio they wan to know that you can model the avengers. And I said WESTERN IP's, because they're never gonna have access to a Jap IP and therefore they don't give a fuck about your anime shit.

They don't give fuck about your original characters because you're not a well-connected Jew looking to follow the elder protocols of zion, so anything you design won't be subversive and poisonous enough.

Are you retarded?
I already answered your question here >>841414
>if you want to design your own portfolio?
WTF does that even mean?
Portfolio for what kind of job?
If you want a job as (production) modeller you go ask a concept artist nicely if you can adapt his concept into an 3D model and then you do it.
If you want a job as concept designer you design your own stuff.
If you don't care about a specific job, you just do whatever you want.
WTF dude, how can you be so dense?

by all means do nothing but 3D if that works out for you, but most artists can do more than one thing decently. being able to quickly translate your ideas into a drawing is an important skill. for example he said in the video that he was given a vague request to make a burning dragon. how do you start off with that? by drawing/painting some concepts digitally or on paper.

Saving time by doing more...because doing a concept from scratch does not take time at all, especially if its supposed to be good.

often times a concept will be so blurry and sketchy that you'll have to make up the difference yourself, so might as well make create whatever the heck you'd like within reason....

Anonymous No. 841838

In my short experience in the industry so far, concepts I was given were mostly simple sketches or low res photos straight from google maps. So there was a lot of freedom and parts I needed to imagine and create by myself (which is great for me). Only a few times there was a detailed illustration I just had to match like a monkey. Those were the most boring projects by far.

I think you should definitely train your creative muscles as well, even if you for SOME reason really just want to copy other people's work like a retard. I'm the opposite, I don't give a fuck and make original personal work 100% of the time, even though I'm not a concept artist.

Also, don't listen to FlippedMemeals.
