Hot takes thread, I'll start.
If it can't run on a Nintendo 64, it's not low poly.

low poly means different things depending on the context, so no

Doubt the 64 could render OP pic.
And even back then, most games just slashed together some primitives like kitbashing.
Just look at the Mario 64 model

Is this low poly then?

Damn, that looks like something the 64DD could push.

If it's running in real-time, it's low poly.

not neccesarrily, since there is a difference between running at sub 30 fps and running at the expected fps of 120

Why not 390?

859 tris. Maybe a little bit higher than ideal but definitely capable of running on the Nintendo 64.

Mario's model from SM64 is over 800 tris, so it's fair enough to work.
The textures being packed into one image is the big issue; it wouldn't fit into TMEM

That's the arbitrary definition of historyless newbie retrofags who thinks the term is in reference to an art movement.
'Low poly' is just a byword for whatever is realtime on whatever hardware you are targeting.
'Low' as opposed to 'High poly' which is in reference to the super subdivided mesh used for offline rendering in film CGI or sculpts used for projection bakes.
For you see compared to the several million polygons used in highpoly graphics a lightweight ~100K polygon character for a videogame is very 'low' on the polycount indeed.
Can't you guys just sit down and name your art movement something else than 'low poly' that states it's retro videogame graphics?
Because to any vet who has been around computer graphics since the dawn of the polygon it doesn't mean what you want it to mean at all.
