🧵 Help a /beg/inner out?

Anonymous No. 842302

Hey hey CG people. I'm a drawfag looking to learn to make stuff like pic related, but I've never done 3D before and not sure where to start. This artist says they used ZBrush, Marmoset Toolbag, Texturingxyz, Marvelous Designer, Substance 3D painter and 3ds Max, but that's a lot of software. I'm not sure what each of them do and if I really need all of them. What do I actually need and what steps would I take to achieving pic related?
(I pirate everything btw)

Anonymous No. 842308

Zbrush is a sculpting tool. It’s for organic stuff. Like humans. Marmoset tool bag is a render engine. You can pirate it if you want or just use Arnold which is built into 3Ds Max. 3ds max is a hard surface modeling software. Unlike Zbrush it is NOT for organic stuff. Think modeling a house vs sculpting a face. Marvelous Desinger is the industry clothe creation software. Substance painter is the best “texturing” software for individual artists. And texturing XYZ is just a website that sells skin textures. It’s not an actual software. You can find all of this stuff on Cgperisa (assuming you don’t have a cgpeers account). You’ll need to get a debrid service tho. You can definitely make a model of that quailty, but it’s gonna take ALOT of time to get that good.

Ohh, it's starting to make sense. So I guess he probably modeled the eyepatch and those ear thingies in 3ds Max, while doing the girl in Zbrush and then put all the different models together in Marmoset Toolbag?

Replace 3ds Max with Blender. 3ds Max is CAD software; it's better for engineers, not for making sculptures of organic things. It's only industry standard because old fucking boomers don't like "new" things like Blender.

Yeah just EA,
Ubisoft,
Infinity Ward (Call of Duty Modern Warfare),
Egosoft (X Series, dropped Autodesk for Blender)

Blender contributors:
Epic, Unity, NVidia, AMD, Valve, Adobe, Ubisoft, Amazon

But you know, no BIG studios right? Dumb software renter.

Learn to ignore shitposts. The majority of posts on /3/, especially if they're "fast" are shitposts.

You make a thread on /3/ and then you wait for someone to post a useful wall of text with information you can use to then find out what you need to learn.
Since your problem isn't so much what you don't know as not knowing what it is you don't know; i.e. you don't even know the terms or ideas yet so you can't google anything.

Anyway, my recommendation for you is to try Maya, Max, Cine4D, and Blender.
Unless you have a trash computer in which case just skip to Blender because it runs on anything.

Then do a starter tutorial on each of them and see if you like one more than the other. If you decide to stick with Maya I would tell you to pirate the Gnomon DVDs on Maya from the internet.
If you stick with Blender then pirate the LONG tutorials off CGPersia.

Regardless of what software you pick start with short tutorials that give you a nice final render, that way you feel good about finishing a project and know that the possibility exists to get a nice result.
Then move on to long SERIES tutorials where over the course of like 30 videos you end up with a finished character.

Here's a demonstration in what goes into a cartoon-y character, this is pretty universal despite happening to be made with Blender.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-mx-Jfx9lA

>wow that's a tremendous amount of work holy shit it takes MONTHS to get that result and that's after n period of time to gain mastery in the software(s) used?!?!?!
Yes, but then you have a production ready character that can be used to make movies.
You can also make a nice looking static sculpt (like your OP pic) in under a day or possibly a few hours (if you're just remaking the same thing you always make and pretending it's new, aka "speed sculpting").

cont. in next post (which will take me a bit to write)

Anonymous No. 842353

>>842351
cont.

Not sure why the formating for my post got really weird, but anyway just to finish on the "Wow that's a lot of effort"; if you want to do a one-off cheap animation you can cheat and do tricks to animate a high density sculpt but you'll have to do a lot of extra work to get a result you want so if the amount of animation you want to do times the amount of extra work you're doing on a cheaty sculpt exceeds the work of properly retopoing and rigging then you're best off making a proper character.

>I don't have any interest in animation
Well you can do plenty that isn't animation but animation is by far 3D's strongest and best feature along with game assets.
With 2D you've probably never really seriously considered doing any animation because of how incredibly hard it is, but with 3D it's actually realistic for one person to do a 30 second or longer animation.
That's how all those one man porn animators make their living.

Some other things to consider since your 2D skills are strong:
Blender, uniquely, has an interesting feature called Grease Pencil which lets you sort of draw or sketch in 3D. There's a lot you can do with it, and most people ignore it (since most 3D people can't draw for shit AND it's not "The Standard Workflow").
Even if you don't end up using Blender, these concepts apply largely across any 3D software:

Rutracker is excellent, but if you wanna be careful, do the following:
Use a hyper visor or virtual box to torrent and shuffle the cracked executables or whatever the fuck the procedure is (different for every program, read the readme for the crack and not the readme for the default program), then use Windows defender and malwarebytes to scan. If it’s all good, copy the installed files (or installer) through a shared folder and launch or install on your main.

Hey guys, OP here.
I was working on my first sculpt in Zbrush (pic related) and then I ran out of polygons. I looked up how to get more and someone suggested using Zremesher, so I tried it and Zbrush said "this feature is not available" or something along those lines and crashed and I lost my project. Can someone tell me how to actually get more polygons, so this doesn't happen in the future?

Use Dynamesh. Dynamically refresh arrangement of polys as you work and gradually add resolution as you get to fine details, then when you're happy, zremesh and reproject the dynamesh onto the cleaner topology.

Autodesk stuff might still work on win7 without any modifications, if not you'll probably have to pirate older versions (2019-2020) or get a VM.
