🧵 Is 3D inherently more soulless than 2D?

Anonymous No. 842480

Look at the image, the 2D version has details and obviously looks painted with care, whereas the 3D version emits a tone of laziness.

Strive is 3D. It all comes down to writing good shaders

No, look at studio blur.

If you try to copy something which already exists in another medium, you have one way to get it right and thousands of ways to do it wrong.
3D looks soulless when it tries to emulate 2D and fail, there's plenty of original styles unique to 3D that look awesome.

Anonymous No. 842493

it's mostly nostalgia, in an alternative universe where 3d came before 2d most people would still say that all the old versions are soul and new is soulless

>painted with care
I can easily say that the 3D version was modelled with care. You're like a person comparing a horse-carriage to a car from the 1900's. Just because one is better than the other it doesn't mean the same will be true a few years from now.

We're in a time period when 3D and 2D are finally merging into one. The philosophy of these 2 types of artists was once very different but they're slowly learning from each other. Look at Strive to see what the future will hold for fake 2D visuals. 2D is a dying medium at worst, and at best it's being absorbed into the 3D medium.

One doesn't inherently less soul than the other. You're just cherry picking a shit model. Anime can translate just fine into 3D if you're not ass at sculpting and shading. see pic related

Anonymous No. 842549

No, it's just harder. 3D needs much more care in every aspect, especially the lighting and texturing. Also, the real soul in 3d comes from the animation.

Also also, I've been saying this for fucking years. 3D is not cheap 2D. Whenever someone brings up shitty CG it's always from a company who thinks 3D is just cheaper and easier than traditional animation

So if your 3d model isn't too mobile for whatever reason (not saying that it's without animations) it will be (extra) soulless?

Don't get me wrong, it looks good, but you'd have to be blind to confuse it for 2D art, even in a still frame, it's still obviously 3D.

handpainted textures with 3d models are peak soul
sadly the pbr workflow turned everything into substance painter models, which is understandable thought because painting pbr textures manually costs lots of time

I've seen people on this board post many times screenshots from Dorohedoro asking how to achieve that level of faux 2d look. Problem was that said screenshots were of hand-drawn 2D scenes from the show.

You might think you can tell but in reality someone told you it was 3D first, then you suddenly developed an eye for it.

Not him, but:

1) he was being hyperbolic
2) what miyazaki an others discovered after extensive research into the question of 3d vs 2d is that humans are used to the myriad imperfectsion and orthographic impossiblities of 2D.
The best looking 3D in the style of 2D, which I will call 2D-like, involves recreating those imperfections and impossibilities by distorting models relative to the camera and other trickery like for example with Guilty Gear Xrd (and I assume Strive) each character has their own hand tweaked shadows independent of the actual lighting, and each of the three shadow channels (or whatever they're called; the hard, mid, and light shadows) can be tweaked

Every frame in hand drawn animation must be drawn, inked, and colored, and that's usually apparent. Effort and time per frame is dozens of times larger in hand drawn animation than 3dcg. Not to say that 3dcg can't be SOULful, but it's harder to pull off.

That doesnt really mean alot. Other than it takes alot of labor to get projects done. But that doesnt mean people who work on animated films with motion capture dont put pride and effort into their work. Watch something like the incredibles or moana.

Not really, the 3D one just doesn't look as interesting, comes off as a knock off and awkward. Why even look that way if they're going for 3D. They're either mimicking the 2D or messing it up in 3D.

Did JoJo's 3D OPs used realistic lighting? All Star Battle used a cel shader and a hatch shader at the same time. It also made textures appear to have higher contrast depending on the postilion of the camera.

The anime stylization was built in a 2D environment. Not a given that even a 1:1 recreation will look "natural" in 3D. Notice in particular Ash's eye in the 2D frame. they are taking advantage of the 2D medium to give him an unnatural profile that makes the eye look more organic, lively and engaged. In the 3D mesh the eyes are in front of the head, so you don't get the same level of engagement.
