Next Gen was a neat example, and the Open Movies by the Blender foundation were okay too, but it needs more proof.
I don't want to rely on Autodesk and Houdini or Cinema 4D to make CG shit.

Those short films the Blender institute releases are more or less just development results. The priority is not on entertaining people. They make those animations to thoroughly test their developments in production. Since many of the artists inhouse are also developers themselves it is helping a lot. That the result is something nice to add to the demo reel and uploading on Youtube is just a nice bonus.
