I watched this movie, and this is a very bad example. The CG was so horrible I couldn't look at the screen and skipped the battle scene. But Rei wasn't so bad apart from the uncanny valley desu.
So Blender is still better than paying monthly in ZBrush.

You mean the Unit 01 vs Unit 13 scene?

I've seen japs on youtube using random programs for drawing and editing photos, and they also have their own 3d software called metasequoia

who would pay for zbrush monthly instead of just getting an infinite license.

some people just cant afford the upfront cost of a permanent license, and so choose to pay a smaller monthly cost
this is why i love companies who offer both subscriptions and permanent licenses on their software, unlike adobe and autodesk

They mainly used 3DS Max, you can see it very often in the Anno documentary.
Not sure what they used Blender for but it must of been for a few select specific jobs.

>SAAS
For the love of god why is this a thing. Whenever I see any kind of software being licensed as a paid subscription I get the urge to shit my pants and ship my shat pants to the CEO with a note saying "Fuck You". I use some software for CFD simulations (google it if you care enough) that sells you a license for a yearly subscription, with a limited number of hours of program run time. And the software won't even start if it can't connect to their servers over the internet to validate your license. Even if you just want to open a file to look at it.
