Be real with me - why is IRay generally considered "shit" and "not even good enough to deserve to be in Painter"? Is it the implementation within Painter being godawful and painfully mismanaged, something that even high school students could program better?

It's not. It's a case-by-case thing. The Maya implementation is stable and fast.

I doubt it. If I'm wrong then please point me to any production-ready renderers that have been written by hobbyists.

Those were already experienced devs and professionals coming in from other projects, all with fundamental knowledge of both computer science in physics, not some random "high school students"
