What does /3/ think of these packages? How do they stack up against the Substance Suite?

When installing Mixer, I still don't understand the part where you select components (sample packs). It says it's for installing additional textures, but I have no idea where they're stored. They're not in my Megascans folder or anywhere, even though it greatly increases the duration of the installation.

Anonymous No. 848311

Mixer+megascans will be basically the only option for realistic graphics in the futur, it's already the case desu, it's basically industry standard. Substance can only do stylized at this point.

Mixer is bloated and slow but it's pretty neat when it works. Very easy to make everything look samey and overly grungy though.

installing all sample packs makes your viewport lag and paiting and masking becomes painfully slow

What is a sample pack?
Where are the sample packs located?

Anonymous No. 848511

Mega scans are pretty helpful, most peeps in industry use them more as a base model then change it in zbrush if they need, though Substance software still seems to be the main texture method for things like assets.

the procedural textures are also nice for blocking out stuff if you need or you don't want to spend hours making more realistic stuff in designer and as always, comes down to what you're using shit for.
the shit being free on an individual level when doing shit in unreal was also a big brain move to help push into the industry

I don't know what kind of spyware have they put into Bridge that is affecting my PC, but the amount of times I was thinking about some asset or texture type and then found it in the featured front page on Bridge when I opened it isn't even funny anymore. It's like it knows exactly what I need every single time, wtf.

Thanks for reading my schizo blogpost.

Come back when you've got some experience. You'll come to realize doing everything using slow and ineffective methods from over a decade ago will produce worse results vastly slower and nobody will care about how your texturing style is slightly unique.

Lacking in features. After marmoset rolled out toolbag 4 it's got back as substitute for working with megascans. They can fuck up their competition very well because of price being free, but nobody using it because it's not half feature complete as toolbag or painter/designer.

If a game studio has to make a realistic forest, they'll use whatever method produces the level of quality they need as quickly and economically as possible. Neither they nor the player will care about how unique and hand crafted the forest is, as long as it looks right.

Im struggling with getting an efficient workflow between Blender and Mixer. Substance painter just bakes all my normals for me, and yea I can manually bake them, but for 1000's of assets it seems like a waste of time.

Fuck man I'm getting really confused with what 3D texture program to use, I'm just a poor Blender n00b who's been using it for not even a year, have mercy. Like I bought Substance and it's slow as fuck and crashes on me regularly. Should I switch to other programs? Mixer? Pic rel? Pic rel seems interesting

Substance painter is what you should be using but if you can't run it might as well switch. Painter allows for overall best/fastest workflow and is industry standard everywhere apart from film where Mari is used.
Armor paint is bare bones and isn't really ready for production.
I've barely used Coat but seemed okay when I was. It's cheap too. It's been a around a while but never really got picked up by the masses.
Mixer isn't as featured as painter but people seem to be betting on it for a bright future and it's free.
All these texturing tools work similar enough and it's really about understanding the PBR workflow and masking in the end, unless you're doing stylized stuff, then it's about painting I guess. I'd stick with SP but if it's unusable then switch to Mixer if you don't like it try Coat.

3D Coat is better than Substance for the hand painted look.

Anonymous No. 856401

We all know Painter is the industry standard, but what could we consider to be in second place? Mixer or Toolbag 4?

Anonymous No. 856403

>>856401
3d coat, tb4 doesn't even have mirroring for some reason and mixer isn't very good at actually painting yet.

Mixer I think has a bright future though, looking forward to them adding a baker.
