It's cool and dandy but have you heard of subdivisiin surface modifier?

how can I quickly set and unset the subdivision preview while I model?

I mean, more like Maya, where you use a simple shortcut to toggle subdiv preview, without having to add modifiers nor go through menus.

it's pretty comfy. Of all the times I tried Blender for modeling, that was the biggest show-stopper.

Surely you jest? Ctrl 0 for no suddiv, ctrl 1, 2, 3 etc for more

It's only been that way since possibly the beginning but certainly since at or before 2.79

Next time spend 30 seconds googling instead of just assuming Blender can't do something

he's trying to learn. You could have just given him the shortcut instead of acting like a typical blendet. It's easier to breath ass than to talk to people like you

thanks. those add a modifier, they are not just for display, apparently. I'm worried about that causing problems down the line.

also, is it possible to change the subdiv level while in edit mode? It just changes between selection modes, apparently.

adding the modifier doesn't cause irreversible changes, until you apply it you can turn it on and off freely
no i don't think it is, you have to tab out

hm, seems like there are no shortcut slots for that. I suppose using Python could be needed to get this feature?

bind a hotkey to 'simplify', and change the max subdivisions to 0
you still need to add the modifier tho
