Those points must still be attached. Detach them and project again.

Thanks! I got rid of all of the ngons and it definitely helped. It still looks like shit but at least it's not warped. Now it's just a matter of me applying the seams correctly.

It is not ideal for non-hard surface most of the time, other than that you may want to check your seams, if you can't see them in edit mode go to UV Edit mode, press A to select all the islands then on the UV menu select "Seams from Islands".
