it can potentially work, but not if it's hopelessly overdone like in your example. her eyes are easily 50% larger (probably more) than normal.
10%? 20%? i can see such (intentional) "mistakes" making a model more interesting, but i also believe if it's pulled off correctly, then a non-trained-person won't be able to tell which part the inaccuracy lies in.

Anonymous No. 849560

Disregarding all the racist bollocks above I believe anon is correct in that the sclera should be a lot whiter.

I often see eyes with a lot of reds around the corner like that in game art, and I've used this myself at various occasions.
Thing is in the absence of the really advanced fine shading that happens in the eyes you either gotta
add a lot of extra 'faux shadow mesh' type geometry (Final Fantasy XIII is first time I happened upon this technique)
or write special shaders in order to blend the sclera and the eyelid in a believable manner.
Your eyelids are very thick and cast occlusion type shadows from any ambient light in the environment you're in.
At the same time your eyes are covered by a film of fluid that is very reflective and you can see your own eyelid and eyelashes reflected
in the eyes, darkening the perimeter further. Unless you're rendering some really fine GI and supersampled raytracing that wont be enough to pick it up from a distance.

So in the absence of going down a shading rabbithole to fix it a simple and effective hack is to just exaggerate the redness around the corner of sclera (GTAV models for an effective example)
This makes the eye look more properly shaded at a glance and as the eye moves around it still looks more natural than like having a burnt in shadow on the sclera
that will look unnatural as the eye moves.

>This image is not deceiving you, or attempting to, it is clearly stylized.

That kinda reveals it's you don't understand what the so called 'uncanny valley' is (and abbreviated UV wth man?).

The idea of the uncanny valley is the observation that as something moves away from cartoon territory and is on the trajectory towards the photorealistic
it's audience appeal dips despite gaining in complexity and requiting more attention and skill to pull it off.

It forms said valley because it dips in appeal despite gaining realism until it passes the floor of the valley and then starts to increase in appeal again.
The idea is you have to be extremely good to reach high on the uphill across that uncanny valley before any attempt at realism will start to pay off.

I'm sad to report I am a millennial. The uncanny valley wasn't made up by them boomers(1946-1964), it was made up by a dude of the 'Greatest Generation' (1901-1927).

I can use Google too motherfuckler, that doesn't change the fact that OP's pic does not trigger any UV (UV bitch) its clearly STYLIZED, it's not cheaply deceiving the viewer like an half assed Daz render. It's doll, it's clearly a doll.

Anonymous No. 852128

>>852100
You're clearly the one from /v/ here anon using uv of all terms as an abbreviation. To actual t/3/pots uv already means something else you know.
The uncanny valley is not about "trying to deceive you" it is about how you induce this creepy feeling in the observer
as you begin to introduce lifelike elements into something dead and artificial.

> It's doll, it's clearly a doll.

Yeah, and dolls are an excellent example of the uncanny valley, lot of people are very creeped out by dolls and their blank stare glass eyes.
People are not esp afraid of child sized dolls because of 'Chucky', 'Chucky' is a thing because people fear creepy big dolls that look like they could come to life.

Mannequins is another great example, even the abstract ones in clean plastic find their ways into all kinds of games and film as a stock horror props.
Only their limb ratios and overall posture is realistic yet even them set off fear for the uncanny in lots of people.

Obv stylization or obv non human features is not enough to avoid this effect, it kicks in as soon as you start render the human form under any sort of realistic light conditions.

Remember when the internet first became aware that 'Real Dolls' was a thing. Me and my buddy googled our way to some videos of people fucking them
and it was like these weird dude who played horror film type music and clearly tried to give off the vibe he was fucking a corpse.
So some of them are prob people with necrophiliac fantasies getting their rocks off. Others pretend they get to rape someone who's drugged/unconscious and that type of shit.

Then ofc there ware people that are just super awkward, weird and shy who wants to experience having sex (as if)
but is too afraid of being naked together with someone else who can judge them.

I'm a very curious person but after some time of looking into it I determined it was one of those things that files under things you don't really want to know.

The Square Enix approach is perfect, FF7R being the obvious standout, most Japanese studios do this, they just don't hit the same fidelity as Square Enix.
