A very interesting topic that will garner much attention from this board I am sure.
Now that we are all here may I ask what is our consensus for what game achieved peak PS2 graphics?

We'll break it down into 2 categories:
Contender for the most aesthetically pleasing titles (subjective)
Contender for what titles where the most visually advanced from a tech standpoint (objective)

Op recognize how all us PS2 bros can live under one common ceiling. Let us not be so thin skinned we fault him for calling us all fags.
After all we're all some kind of fags here anon. Personally I am like the highest tier of fag: max fag.

the problem with nostalfags is that they attach the lowpoly models to the PS2 , but that is only caused by the chinks that designed the hardware , look the initial games , most of the games made by sony already had better 3D models because they had more technical knowledge on how to work with the console

and that happened with the ps3 too

the lack of information make them to believe that the graphics are directly related to the console, but is not, is just a technical limitation and competitive advantage that sony created with their weird architecture

The fighting games of the era had quite detailed character work that wouldn't look too out of place in a somewhat up to date game.
Jacky here from VF4 has a polycount similar to the player model in titles like GTAV.

With modern shaders and normal maps some graphics from the PS2 era could be made to not look all that out of place today.

As a cahracter artist I feel about 20K is the cutoff where you have to start make really hard sacrifices to ideal shape you're going after and start simplify a lot more than you want.
With the budget of about 100K we have today we're pas the point we have to limit ourselves aesthetically and can set out to depict pretty much whatever to a satisfactory degree.

You just paint exactly what you see there to the texture canvas anon. They're diffuse only textures.

The color you wanna see on a given pixel you paint to that given pixel, that's all there is too it.
As for what to paint where you want your fake shading to hold up from any angle so you paint in
shadows onto anything that is occluded and you paint highlights along any edge that is protruding.

The idea is very similar to how people who paint warhammer miniatures does it.
Watch some tutorial on that and you're armed with everything you need to know to pull it off.

is about composition, like a painting, the main characters are the most important piece of the whole scenario , so you have to focus and give your MCs the most saturated values and designs for make it stand visually

I never had a console and love that style.
Proof that limitation is the mother of good art. I really can't bother about 3d realism. I can respect it in 2d, though. Even there I prefer more stylistic takes. Computers and Chinks will one day do realism well enough and people will realise they never wanted realism in the first place.

there isn't too much available online, you need to rip off the models using an emulator and other software, I'll check a game for that when i have time
