How do you impress a studio when there are so many step by step tutorials out there for how to do everything, even advanced stuff?

You obv don't build along or post anything from some step by step tutorial.
You use the anatomy/sclupting/hardsurface/modelling/painting techniques you learn to create your own original content.

As for what to model you do anything you like. For your own projects you need to pick a subjectmatter that interest you.
Something that captivates you enough that you can put in all them thousands of hours perfecting your skills doing it.
Once you've learned to depict things to a noteworthy standard people will be able to look at your stuff and gauge if you are a suitable hire.

Once you have some real skills you can throw in some things outside of your field of interest just to demo how well you can do it.
Like my own portfolio is riddled with this military sci/fi cyberpunk and dark fantasy horror type stuff.
But I also keep some cute friendly pieces in there kinda just to kinda say:
"Hey, I'm into this dark hardcore shit, but I'm not some maniac if you want me for something more wholesome".

Just do whatever you like and do it well tho, that is the main thing you oughta focus on to further your skills.

The current bar for an entry level position is you need to build your own multi-million dollar game studio from scratch, then burn it to the ground to comply with their non-compete clause.

Shit. That kind of answers my question I was about to ask. Is there no chance for a guy with some decent photoshop/3dmodeling/animation skills to find a job without having to spend another year making a portfolio? I need money asap, any graphics related entry job would be ok.
