I just downloaded the 2.7 version, and it's literally torture to use. Doesn't even feel like blender. Horrible, horrible. They've come so far, it's insane

Blender compared to Maya is pretty much the equivalent to GIMP and Photoshop.
No matter how much you spit shine a turd, it will always be a turd. The real professionals will continue to use Maya exclusively and disregard Blender

Except Blender as well as most other major softwares are used in conjunction with eachother in AAA games and massive Hollywood movies. You hate to admit it, but not only is Blender a perfectly viable choice for lower budget projects, it already has plenty of industry use as well.
At the level of an average 3D amateur, Blender is the obvious choice. At the higher level, Blender is a preferential choice for many professionals. It will always be about weighing pros vs cons, but people hate to admit Blender isnt even close to how it was years ago. Its viable now.
I still think GIMP is trash but i use it and its perfectly viable, i dont doubt it will get there.

Blender is nowhere near Maya in terms of animation workflow, but for modeling, it's great.

photoshop will be useless to me until they add this indicator line when you click a point and then move the mouse while holding shift. GIMP and photoshop have the same behaviour if you click again: a line is drawn between the two points, but in the absence of a line indicating where you originally clicked and where the resulting line will run through the function is all but useless.

That's because Blender is by far the most popular and most used software among hobbyists, indies, students, amateurs, freelancers, and small and middle enterprises.
10 years ago you'd get threads filled by Maya users, and 15 years ago it would be 3DS Max users.

Yeah, but the difference is that 10-15 years ago the majority of users wasn't behaving like a bunch of cultist / fanboys more obsessed with tribalistic warfare and screaming down others with different opinions rather than concentrating on and making art.
The whole development reminds me of the video game industry when consoles and smartphones became mainstream and everybody and his uncle became a gamer.
Its always the same, once something changes from being a subculture to mainstream, the plebs arrive and their idiocy and bad taste pulls down everything.

I loved how nuts the old hot keys were and it took me a while to learn the new ones. I know there's a setting for the old style, but they did make things better and I don't want to be an old foggy. Lots remained the same though. Here's a little text file I made while learning old blender:
right click - select
left click - move 3d cursor
pan - shift middle mouse click
shift c - 3d cursor to center ( or shift s then cursor to center ) ( camera to center too)
shift r / g / s - reset object rotation / position / scale
shift a - add mesh
tab - toggle object / edit mode
ctrl tab - vertex / edge / face mode
z - wireframe view / solid view
e - extrude
j - join
f - face
ctrl r - loop cut ( right click to center cut )
alt + right click - select edge loop
s xyz - scale xyz
g xyz - move xyz
r xyz - rotate xyz
gg - slide edge
k - cut ( hold control to center cut | press space to end cut )
control alt shit c - set mesh origin ( eg center of mass or 3d cursor)
rotate around shit - n ( for right menu ) -> Lock To Cursor
w - subdivide menu in edit mode
ctrl p - parent -> with automatic weights ( select object then armature. order matters )
alt p -> clear parent ( if you mess up )
n - toggle right menu
t - toggle left menu
ALT R to reset all rotations,
ALT G to reset all translations,
ALT S to reset all scales.
shift tab - snap to grid
shift control tab

they're still dumb as fuck, like setting subdivision sets to be ctrl+1, 2, 3 etc. makes sense until setting it to 0 is literally ctrl+0 like that's something your hands like doing, rebound that shit to be ctrl+1 is 0 etc so you can actually use it to quickly preview smoothing on and off.
honestly though I don't know if I could even recommend blender without machin3tools shit saves you so much pain

No blender is fun to use.

While I love to go to blender (2.9+) to make new stuff in 3D.

However GIMP is a fucken dumpster fire only use it for drawing if you want to have a nervous break down. No joke ! Literally nothing should be compered to GIMP because you will fail GIMP is more shit and hellfire then anything else.

It's not that different. The biggest thing is the new material system. They dropped the old system and the "Textured" view and made everything use shaders, which is fucking great. Other than that, it's mostly the same.
The new icons suck though. Don't know why the "flat single color" look is so in right now.
