I have always liked game graphics and took an unsuccessful stab at 3d back in 2011 ish where I didn't get much further than shattering some glasses and making a skyscraper but what actually pushed me over the edge was seeing games like spyro reignited and kingdom hearts 3 that were hitting animated movie visuals in the cutscenes, made me realise that you don't need to wait around to render anymore like you did in the old days and that if you wanted to make something there was no longer the looming threat of having to wait hours and hours to render out a decent looking animation.

First what really got me interested, I think was 2008 Iron Man movie. The suit was so fucking cool, and I wanted to learn 3D immediately.
https://youtu.be/uxXsh6keurc
Then there was a '2012' movie in 2009, which had truly inspiring CGI.
https://youtu.be/ce0N3TEcFw0
Then I stumbled upon Greyscalegorilla C4D tutorials on Vimeo in 2010
https://youtu.be/6WwWidekdxE
Then the whole DSLR craze started.
I discovered Film Riot tutorials
https://youtu.be/Xy3m7I8jBuM
As well as Andrew Kramer with AE and Element 3D
https://youtu.be/O803EAA3vKI
Then bunch of Corridor Digital vids in early 2010's
https://youtu.be/hDlif8Km4S4
Then Tron Legacy came out, which blew me the fuck away
https://youtu.be/e1dHhktFLPs
And then it just snowballed from here. I got the hang of the new internet reality, and the world of tutorials and researching for yourself.

Before Toy story, before Jurassic Park, there was a newcast on a state owned boadcast channel about a group of students in my country who were learning computer graphics - using TOPAS or 3d STudio for DOS or something - and then i got myself a pirated copy for half the price of an original (pirated copies were hard to come by back then) 3D studio R4 for DOS. The fortune i spent on english books back in 1997 was something else.

what got me into it was having to make a decision of what kind of creative route I would take for a career. I studied animation at a time when the shift from 2d to 3d was taking place so I dont think I or many other artistes had too much of a choice. i then focused on modeling for games because I found animating was too much of a chore and not that interesting

I always liked the idea of creating places that don't exist. Not like sci-fi stuff, more like "what if" stuff. I can 2D but I've always had a hard time putting down on paper exactly what my brain is thinking. It's much easier to replicate it in 3D I've found.
I've always liked the idea of making movies and things too, but the kind of locations and the props I envision would be either incredibly difficult or impossible to find, especially with limited resources. Therefore it takes care of that too. Not that I'm at the stage to do something of that magnitude, but it gives me a goal, a focus, something to strive for. And as things stand, that's good enough for me.

I was always shit with drawings. I literally was unable to fake 3D on 2D paper. While having no problem with 2D 2D drawings (you know the absolutely flat ones who do not pretend to have a 3D perspective thing street signs).

Then robot wars was popular and me and my friends where inventing robots to fight and I drew shots from the left and top of my robot idea I did have and was like
>If I learn 3D I can make this reality.

Fast forward multiple years and yes I can model shit loads of thins in 3D.

I also always loved clay.
I think 3D is more natural for humans be it 3D clay or sculpture or 3D modeling. 2D is fake central.

Can you imagine that back in the day I was thinking my clay modeling skills are useless because:
>Everyone can print out and use 2D drawings, what will I do with my clay models ? How can they posible by used.

LOL Now they are everywhere from games to movies to 3D printing.

I also think it might be the least taxing on my PC while still putting out an acceptable amount of quality renders too.

The problem is that I also autistically love the way the Source Filmmaker renders and lights models that I really want to replicate that in Blender.
The problem is that if I manage to accomplish this I don't know how I am going to progress in Blender as I might be overly satisfied and feel no need to improve.

did I post on this thread before? i can't remember and none of the posts seem like something i'd write

anyways:

I've always been "creatively inclined", in the sense that I made shitty sketches in school and was fascinated by the way GMod animators like kitty0706, dasboschitt, and various other classic machinimists created artwork. Beyond that, something else caught my eye:

WoW machinimas. Seriously. Tales of the Past 3 is something I watched when I was a kid, and while I never understood what the fuck was going on when I was 10 or whatever, I still was starstruck by it, a feeling I had with it as much as I had it with Divided Soul -- another machinima that I thought was amazing for its time.

I tried and failed to make GMod animations, be it stop-motion or using animation helper addons, and they all sucked. More than that, they're lost forever.

When people began to use the leaked Source Filmmaker client from 2011 or something, I was even more amazed by the work people could do when they weren't restricted by stop-motion animation.

When it came out in 2013, I tried my hand, but I came to realize that while I was terrible at making one pose flow to another, I was able to at least appreciate the still moment in time better. Things like the flare gun scene in Meet the Pyro inspired me to make still frames -- poses, in the end -- in lieu of animations.

For about 6 years thereafter, I butted my head against SFM's UI, its 3.5 GB ram limit, and its ability to lag for no reason. I honed my skills pretty well, and eventually I lost all of my files when an external drive died.

Demoralized by that, I decided to use blender instead; I had built up a decent understanding of the program over the course of a year of binging tutorials, and think I'm pretty decent at it now. I don't think I'm particularly good, but alright at least.

Pic related, was trying to emulate WoW cinematic lighting. I don't have anything else on hand that I want to post here.

Based Gmod enjoyer.

I got into it because i wanted to import assets from other games into gmod.

Learned to rip and all that shit untill i got a game that would rip the asset but it would fuck all the UV maps.

Spent days learning to map UVs over textures.

From then on learned rigging and just contuined until i was making my own assets.

Even in 3d you can feel this picture.
>Make a separate layer for rig object transforms
>Accidentally move an IK bone with it active with auto keying
>spend a shit ton of time figuring out what went wrong, because you saw the mistake hours after switching back and forth several times and adding changes to the base layer as well

>Got bored
>Downloaded sfm
>invested lots of time into it
>Got filtered by realizing i barely made anything good and didnt learn shit and was practically cris of steam forums
>abandoned it for years
>Got bored again
>downloaded blender with knowledge where i sucked ass in SFM
>Now trying to actually improve my animation and visuals every time i make something instead of shitting out render after render
>People started telling me that i make actually decent or even good shit now.
This is also what made me support gatekeeping. If someone actually likes doing 3D and is ready to improve - they crawl out of the filter one way or another someday.
It sucks lots of communities are anti-gatekeeping now, creating an abundance of etetnally amateur shit.

I wanted to make mods for coomer games.
I still make mods for coomer games and not much else as I have no delusion of being an artist, but I'm learning how to sculpt and it's fun.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter is what sparked my brain immediately to want to figure out 3D. It also made me obsessed with Egypt.

I ended up doing level design over the years for several games but never actually got into 3D properly until pretty recently desu.

I actually want to do 2d art, but do not have any skill at it, so I am taking the 3d route because it feels it would be easier to meet my accuracy goals that way.

I got the idea for it when I tried sculpting and felt it being more intuitive. That having said, I seem to be stuck in tutorial hell for the past few months. Despite me not slacking, I still do not know most of Blender's features and it will take me years to get familiar with it all, but that is fine, I could spend this time doing worse things.

I feel that if I tried doing 2d seriously there is a serious danger of me getting mired in mediocrity. For the sake of quality I'd probably just end up tracing everything, so why not trace my own 3d models if things are going to be like that?

It is kind of ironic that I am entering art for the sake of money when I could get a lot more doing programming which I am an expert at, but I want to do my own things unbeholden to anyone. When my art skills are good enough I'll create illustrations for a visual novel I've been envisioning. After I've trained my visual skills enough I'll study musical composition and compose my own music for it too.

I’m a video editor by trade and wanted to expand my skill set and do something more creative, so I branched out into 2D motion design and I’ve always loved building stuff so 3D seemed like the natural progression of that. What really got me going was a stop-motion shirt I created when I was in college that got me interested in digital character modeling and animation. The rest is history.

Based. ILM’s work on Iron Man is really incredible. Tot his day out of all the movies, Tony’s Mk.III feels the most realistic. Mix of practicals and CG suit aged really well.
