New to 3D, looking to learn but I have some doubts.
How long would it take to learn to do stuff like the following pictures? I want to make something that looks retro in this way, a game. How hard would it be for a one man team to do stuff like this?

No idea. Just grab a 3D tool of your choice and get good with it by practicing?

To put some retro stuff into perspective; none of the artists at Blizzard had any 3D experience when work on Diablo 1 started. They had 2-3 months to fuck around with 3D Studio MAX 1.0 and get to a point where they could crank out all the assets at a reasonable pace.

I downloaded Blender, I just want to know how do I start, the donut thing seems to be required I guess. >>854891

I knew this would come up, fucking hate that shit.
Look, the concepts might be similar but I know what to limit and what not to overextend, I don't have a theme and TLN is taking lots of time, I'd rather cut some corners. I'm not going for their level of detail, it would take too much time.

It will have to, otherwise you have TLN, postponed and postponed. You gotta make a compromise.

Most of that era was 2d images. I would learn to kitbash photos instead. Maybe consider using AI to make some upscaled stuff.

Playing mix and match with assets? Can you tell me more about this? How do you use the upscaled stuff?

Anonymous No. 855202

>>854885
you won't be able to recreate those feeling with simply 3D asset. You won't even be able to fake it with rendering everything on a low-res and up-scale it. In any picture you've shown, the game won't render everything each frame. It's alot of pre-render. It's just a position and a diffuse map. The lightning is baked in diffuse map and the character usually has no light. If you plan on making a game out of it and you want to use an engine, use the 2D renderer then add your sprite on it, which obviously are pre-rendered 3D model. If you genuinly want to use 3D model (like ff7). Render the 3D before, then render the map. Make sure you retain the projection & world transform matrice somewhere in a text-file to render the 3D character properly.

another tip, use retro technique, but do not try to do retro, use retro technic with your modern hardware. People like pixel art, but they like pixel technique used on high resolution, not your average wannabe making a 16x16 image and pretend it's game is worth playing.

>How hard would it be for a one man team to do stuff like this
not that hard, I did it.

In English, doc.
So I get this, I can make the scene in another program and import it as a png by doing the rendering, this would be the 2D approach, correct? But I don't fully get the whole mapping thing, explain.

I was going to say what the below anon said. Make the game 2d with a 3d character. That way you can use a mixture of photos and make 3d assets for things that dont exist. That's what Sierra used to do for those adventure games. Decide on a background resolution you want to display. If a photo ends up grainy at that resolution use an Ai upscaler. That's what people are doing with old games now.

>>855206
>>855267
I understand now, sort of. Yes, I could see that being easier
I originally wanted pic related but I imagine it'd be too costly, correct, I mean, I really don't think this is done the way you described it.
I will try to find a proper example

https://youtu.be/XGxI6leMhGs

The more I look at it the more I think you're right, 3D character with 2D environment all caked up, I just don't get things like cars and so on.

Why?

Anonymous No. 855414

Dude, there is no shortcut.
To learn 3D it's already complicated. To be able to make something out of it that looks good, even in a retro style, is even harder.
To make an interactive game... Well good luck.
Just start, practice, and eventually you will get there.
There is no quick way around it, no tutorial to get you there in 2 weeks, it depends on how much time you invest and how dedicated you are.
Everything is possibile, as long as you put the time into it.
