Anyone using Fusion 17 here? Impressions? I tried the free version but the features I want are stuck behind a paywall.

Long time Fusion user here, even back to when it was called Digital Fusion and developed by eyeon.
What specific features are you talking about?

I believe that nuke is superior software but it's far too overpriced at 10k for the first year and 2k for maintenance per year for home use. My use case is > 4k meaning I dont qualify for indie

i'm a full time editor, I use resolve + fusion, both studio version (license dongle came with bmpcc). Far better editing experience than Premiere - I like having a node based compositor, competent title generator, and non-suckass audio editing layout all built into different tabs, and not having to deal with Adobe bridge or whatever they call it now. I use Fusion specifically all the time + Reactor, it does everything I need it to do, mainly for tracking or keying. Wish it had better Boris FX support (it works but barely) and better saver node export options. Also, both audio controls and the keyframe menu suck.

why do you need both studio versions over using only the free da vinci resolve?

Either he bought the license or got it from one of Blackmagic Design's products (some of their small digital cameras come with a free license for resolve).
As to why he bought it, maybe he wanted to unlock the small amount (but useful for big video editing production) of features placed on the free version's paywall, either way its cheaper in the long run compared to adobe's shit subscription pricing.
