IANAL but it AFAIK doesn't mean that you can't create an improved version from scratch in a couple of days if you do what is legally permitted.
Scratch that last part, rather what can be constructed as an argument against you in an juristic conflict before a court of law.
Buying a product that is competing with your idea can be considered market research. Remember, they have the burden of proof.

If you're reimplementing the same thing from scratch, your only concern would be them patenting the algorithm/method itself (which is possible if you're dealing with a dickhead company like Apple). Otherwise go for it, and get a lawyer if you can afford one.
