I've decided to step into game development and I'm trying to get 3D modelling down. Friends recommended Blender, so I've been using that. What is a good way to make things like armor, robes and clothing for low-poly models?
A lot of tutorial videos seem to just be for high-poly models.
We're just focused on making a tech demo so we only need something to cover our playermodel right now.

Look at other low poly models and try to imitate that. Most clothing is just going to be plain quads with a painted texture to make it look like cloth.

Oh I don't need to simulate cloth physics or give it textures right now, I'm just genuinely looking for a method to .. put clothes over a character that fit.
We want to be able to load the outfit onto the character and I don't want it being too small, or too large, or clipping intensely.

Copy the part of your character you want to be covered by clothes, separate that copy into a new object and either add a solidify modifier or scale and shape the clothes manually.
Something like this

As for avoiding clipping it's a matter of rigging/weightpainting the clothes carefully. You could also hide the parts of your character that are clipping through the clothes if your game engine allows it. Or use shapekeys.

Don't be an idiot. Pay someone else to do your models.

Fuck that, I love modelling, especially for my very own project. Why rob myself the experience? This is my passion project I'm not just gonna go with someone elses' soulless shat-out model. Its not as satisfying of an end-result.

an experience you don't even know how to do?

How do you love something you don't know how to do?

>We're just focused on making a tech demo so we only need something to cover our playermodel right now.

Just use someone else's model for the time being.

Stop trying to be a one man army. It almost never works out. Stick to your coding - assuming you even know how to do that.

Because its stupid, if you want to build a house do you hire a pro who gets shit done in a reasonable amount of time or do you spent years to study architecture or engineering yourself?
If you have a goal you take the fastest direct route to archive that, and if you are creative enough to be able to do rough designs, do that, draw it on paper or whatever and instruct the artist so that he creates it to your satisfaction.
Everything else is a delusional power fantasy that will never manifest as you think it will.
People way more intelligent, diligent and able have failed attempting to do that and EVERYBODY who knows a little about game development and 3D art will advice against it for obvious reasons.
You want to have your cake and eat it too?
Fine, do 3D on the side as hobby, maybe when your tech demo is successful and you have learned enough 3D to be competent, you might be able to put some of your own stuff into the actual game.

you can use free assets as placeholders though, but making your own stuff is so much funner
