Software is mostly irrelevant. If you're not artistically inclined or trained then no feature-laden piece will help you make decent work. The computer is a tool, it does nothing without your genius.

Not OP but what would be the best choice for video game asset creation. I've played around in blender but I don't have much interest in animation so I'd like to switch something more tailored to game development.

Text, graphic design elements (working with SVG to 3d) and motion graphics stuff with the node system in it.

Basically c4d is really lovely for advertising and TV work and not ideal for anything else.

I'd move maya and blender up to great, 3ds to good or great.
substance is a great program but I'm getting tired of people shitting up the world with auto baked smart materials, cause they lack art direction, which often turns to be soulles. Obviously not a fault of the software, just personal spite.

be careful about pirating nuke. The foundry is known to send out letters to individuals even without any commercial dwelling. If you are NA or EU i'd get the free version to learn it. Or diconnect your PC from the internet and use burner emails and don't register anything connected to you on their websites.

good shit.
For everybody wondering, the foundry comares imei numbers between the software-reports and email-headers to find out names, adresses and social media profiles. I'm not even sure if they are still practicing their violent copyright practices anymore since blackmagic dropped fusion to like $170 and the market seems more competetive than ever. But better safe than sorry.

The old interface is pants on head backwards and I hate it. There are options in the interface to make it work more like other software of your choice but it's not the same. I've never tried the update.

>3DS Max
Is great and is what I learned a ton about making 3D models on. Unless you're pirating, I'm not sure it's worth the money, especially since they have a subscription only last I checked.

>Cinema 4D
This is what I prefer, mostly only because this is what my school used so it is what I am most comfortable with (I am studying digital media arts), and is like 1/2 the price of 3DS max last I checked.

>Maya
I played around with it once like 15 years ago. I dunno what the big hype is (or was), but then again, last I tried it, I didn't know jack shit about making 3D models.

>sketchup
If this is what I think it is, just learn 3DS or C4D instead of wasting your time.

I haven't heard of or used any of the others.

Is it a general rule to have a semi-decent pc to run ANY 3d modeling software? I admit my laptop is 5+ years old but it can barely handle any 3d software I try to use.

Anonymous No. 869230

>>869229
not OP but I can tell you, that you generally want as powerful of a computer as possible, especially when it comes time to render your project. If you're modeling something and not rendering, you can get away with not as powerful of a computer, depending on how big of a project it is.

I'm willing to bet your laptop has some bottom of the barrel integrated graphics chip in it. Granted, this should be enough to *start* a 3D modeling program, you will have an awful time doing anything more than just making a few cubes. Get a computer with a good graphics chip.

Build your own. Good GPU, lot of RAM. The rest is less important, but decent enough not to bottleneck you.

Anonymous No. 869235

>>869231
I don't really have much on mind, but if you're a beginner, then pretty much anything made in the last couple years that you can afford with an NVIDIA graphics chip should be plenty to get you off the ground, for now. Make sure whatever you get says it has a discrete or dedicated GPU. Otherwise it'll be integrated and you'll be in the same boat you are now. If it doesn't specify on the tech spec page if it's discrete/dedicated or integrated, then move to another one because it is probably integrated. The reason I say NVIDIA as opposed to AMD/Radeon is because a lot more software things support NVIDIA than Radeon. CPU IMO doesn't matter if it's Intel or AMD.

Not sure if this is in your price range (it was the 1st laptop I saw on newegg.com) but see pic related. That's what you want to see. IMO the part that says "card" is misleading, unless it really is a card that can be replaced (only seen it in super high-end laptops that are >$6,000 so yeah, not likely actually a "card").

Here's a link to the laptop if you want to see for yourself

Self built is cheaper. Also don't get a laptop then, you pay more for mobility. Unless you absolutely need mobility.

You can't exactly work on graphics if you can't afford a computer that can do said graphics, can't really get around that.

Anonymous No. 869308

>>869249
This. High performance laptops also tend depreciate so quickly that it is practically throwing money away. Unless you truely need the mobility (if you have to ask, you probably don't need it), get a desktop. They're cheaper and have bigger heat syncs/radiators and fans (the cooling system) so can take the abuse much better. Personally I would never use a laptop for heavy loads like rendering for hours upon hours. If I ever got a high performance laptop, I'd strictly use it for modeling and send the job to my desktop at home to do the heavy lifting. The most I'd use it for would be a few renders here and there to make sure the model/texture & shit look OK before sending it to my desktop at home, comitting it to hours upon hours of work.
