🧵 Possibilities of business

Anonymous No. 862482

Hey I’m in need of business related advices.
I dream of becoming independent. I’m an ex-fullstack webdev and I quit my job 3 years ago to make a game. Wich lead me to learn Houdini and many other softwares. I said Houdini because I feel it’s my best skill/software.
My little sister is studying Graphic design and is very talented to everything 2D.
Since I never studied this field at school, I have no idea of what we can do if we team up but I’m well aware of the potential we have if we join each other in a common project. So what kind of company/activity can we do. I’n very good at programming too btw

If your sister studies Graphic design then she must probably learn something about marketing and market research so use this to your advantage. Have her research very basic and easy minimal games that are trendy with (casual) gamers as a kind of homework or do it yourself.
Plus-points if you can involve one of her teachers in this idea. They might have good resources/sources to make that research efficient and easy.
Then you also want her to look for trendy and easy to archive visual styles. (Retro) Pixel graphics come to mind, but it probably is best to be open minded at first and let her play around with something that is not only easy but kinda fun for her to create. Passion creates productivity, if its fun than it isn't hard work. Same applies to your side of it.
What he said >>862495 makes total sense.
You want to create a very small mini-game as an prototype and test-bed, something that you don't waste too much time on and where you can learn as much as possible in the least amount of time.
24h gamedev jams are a thing.
Since you are doing Houdini, even if you go the 2D route, you can put a 2D art style in an 3D world/framework/engine to be able to facilitate the full power of Houdini.
You should research and learn how to build procedural levels and toolsets to archive max amount of results that look interesting enough without demand for too much human input (work with placeholders and focus on the tech side at first).
You also need to research an engine that the game will run on. If you go mobile Unity is probably a good choice as it is fairly common, has tons of learning material and a large community as well as an Houdini integration. Unity works with C#, Rust and Lua, python even.
Make yourself familiar with the mindset of an gamedev and the engine by looking at examples, play around, brainstorm, maybe you experience a happy accident.
Also network with other gamedevs and the community around Houdini and Unity.

Pitch her the idea of making an incest WEG together and post results.
