Everything has been done already.
This is what industry professionals were capable of. CGSociety was a great place to connect with and learn from some of the best in that profession. Not so much anymore.

Zbrush was long established for this kind of work by 2006. I remember getting release 1.0 in late 2000 and while limited by today's standards it was already capable of pushing my own work to new levels.
I still have that 1.23 on one of my old machines. That one actually saw quite some use in commercial projects.
