3D tech usually evolves pretty good ways to fake pathtraced levels of detail in real-time. tends to be that pathtraced renders from the one gen match real-time details two generations later. back then polygons were the only distinction (no limit to subdivisions for an offline render of course) but now, polygons are getting subpixel so that seems to be even more true than it would have been back then.
