Implying the legit vanilla version is better and copy-protection never ever slows down operations, right?

You'll get into using certain zbrush workflows where you encounter random crashes and timebombs and then you might get some hard system freezes. Really, the thing about paying for zbrush is that its physically hard to pay for it in that they dont accept debit cards

ZBrush is a perpetual license, though. They say that upgrades are free for a year and beyond that up to the sole discretion of Pixologic, but I've gotten every update free since I purchased it 5 years ago. They're one of the few decent software companies left.
Fuck Autodesk though, pirate the shit out of 3DS Max.
>>864032
Same for me. If it's Autodesk or Adobe, they can get fucked. If it's a smaller company that sells perpetual licenses and frequently updates while the devs engage with the community, I'm willing to pay for it.

nope.
Zbrush is $40/mo rental. Most people here cant afford $900 USD up front and choose to rent.
Max is $250
480 + 250 = 730

autodesk doesn't even have the option of perpetual licenses, fuck em
Zbrush is worth it if you got the money and don't won't to make the "I'll totally buy it after I pirate it" excuse. Nobody ever buys the same software after pirating, they just hope to get hired and receive a license from their employer.

The main problem is that the costs pile up very quickly. If you're say an environment artist you're going to need at least 4 core programs. ZBrush, 3ds Max, Marmoset, Adobe Substance suite. That's a lot of money, and that's not even including the more niche stuff like S-tier cloth modeling. It was even worse in the past when UE4 cost money and they didn't have the Quixel shit yet so you also have to pay up the ass for good base textures (still do honestly). High-end PC prices are also insane right now (RTX 3090 is 3500 USD here). The other cards all have shit memory capacity and can't render light mapped scenes worth shit). 3080 Ti has barely enough memory but also costs a fortune. AMD has better capacity at lower prices but their cards lacks too many key software features from nJudea.
In the past you could more easily get away with using older software. I remember using 3ds Max 2010-2014 and old Photoshop versions for ages. But modern stuff has a lot of really useful features and integration that massively speed up workflow (for example the retopology stuff in Max 2021/2022 is so good you simply cannot do without).

Did they ever release a stable 2021 version? The ones I downloaded always crashed, so I pirated Marvelous Designer instead for clothes and kept my good ol' reliable 2019 version.

>The main problem is that the costs pile up very quickly.
ZBrush is $40 monthly or $900 for life. So if you plan on using it for more than 2 years, better to buy it outright.
3DS Max $215 monthly, but the annual plan saves over 30% so is always preferable.
Substance is $20 a month without Stager because who gives a shit about Stager.
Marmoset is $300 for life
S-Tier cloth modeling from Marvelous Designer is $40 a month. There's also CLO3D for $50.
So the grand total if you buy ZBrush, Marmoset and rent the others (3DS Max on annual plan) is $3,620. The next year, you would pay $2,420 since ZBrush and Marmoset are paid off. Divide that by 12 and you have $200 a month for software. Less than a day's salary for an average 3D artist. And if you're employed, you're probably not paying for some of those licenses to begin with. But for hobbyists, the situation changes. All the stuff I wrote above is the reasoning for piracy, not against it. I can understand that, especially if you don't live in a country where these kinds of figures are even remotely feasible to pay.
As for hardware, that's an entirely different discussion altogether since it's a physical product hampered by supply-chain problems and scalpers. But yeah, shit's expensive. I got incredibly lucky by upgrading my PC just before the world fell apart.
