The most impressive CGI segments from the original Jurassic Park looks so impressive and realistic because they're not CGI segments at all, they're real camera footage.

Right one are photographed toys.
They fucked up by using thick bokeh.

the CGI scenes also look really good though. even though the tools were primitive, the artists were incredibly skilled and knew exactly how to animate them and what lighting/colors to use etc.

Yeah, some scenes look very sketchy but the T-rex vs raptors at the end with the banner falling down
is all CGI, or almost all CGI, and that one looks great even today.
To me JP1 and Starship Troopers is peak blockbuster effect artistry, knowing what a nosedive film making took from that era onward saddens me.

you and every other professional who mentally grew out of being 15 years old.
they got so much flak after they started the "vfx artists react" series a few years ago that they literally got chased off r/vfx
>inb4 plebbit
I know, I know, but r/vfx actually has pros lurking sometimes, unlike here. Not that there's any interesting discussion, but still.

it's quite impressive how they have been doing it for so long, are obviously making decent money from youtube ad revenue, have an interest in trying new techniques and learning workflows...yet everything they make has this clumsy, janky, university project kind of feel to it.
i would say in cases like the jurassic park video it's just because they only had a few days to finish it but even the stuff they spend ages on, and work really hard on, it still kind of okay in terms of quality/filmmaking. That and everything is always guns and lightsabers like they're 15 years old. They never seem to do anything actually impressive with all these drones, 3d scanning, animation rigs etc.
