so I'm starting courses for 3D graphic design next semester, what am I in for? will I be extra prepared if I take the time to learn the basics of blender ahead of time?

Youre in for a tough time. You can just learn about everything from blender docs if youre using blender but knowing what to use where takes years to master.

if anything, you'll probably learn maya and not blender. but I do suggest using blender if that's the only thing you got to practice. depending on what you are specifically taking, you shouldn't be in for a rough ride. It might be difficult but you will get to a good level in the end.

take a look at Adobe Illustrator, that's what you'll use most likely, yes you could use Inkscape too but it is shit.

my bad, ignore my previous message. I forgot there's a difference between 3D courses for game graphics and general design.

Who gives a shit about software learn the concepts, bonus points if you do a mathematics course then you'll be ahead of 99.9% of industry morons and get higher paying jobs like doing simulations in houdini or scripting or whatever.
What the fuck is 3D graphics design? How to make a cube look nice? You can learn that in a week by learning product lighting instead of some bullshit '3d graphic design" lol wtf even is that? Sounds like a way to take money from dumb kids who want to do 3D tm.
You're in for spending a year learning nothing of value and then regretting wasting all that time for the rest of your life that's what you're in for.
Dont' say I didn't warn you.

The course is all about networking and making connections

In a normal design course you'd be making connections with hot girls but in a 3D course I'm guessing it's all fat smelly nerds

Wel Blender Guru on YT has new donut tutorial for 3.0 these are 10~30 minute episodes of absolute basics across several areas: moving around, modeling, sculpting, texture painting, geometry nodes, shader nodes, lighting, animation, composition and rendering.
It's not an equivalent for a full course but it gives you basic idea what blender is about.

only if the class allows you to use blender. only college courses i learned 3D from forced maya.

Blender guru is an amateur and his workflows because of that are not industry standard nor even accepted for hobbyists. He preaches toy workflows.
