It was pretty ahead of its time, and still can kick ass of many render engines in features/quality department
many oldschool fags still use it, but it struggles in workflow speed and features
newtek gave up on it

maybe 20 years ago

nope, it can barely keep up, if at all.
>many oldschool fags still use it
300 people worldwide isn't many.

I loved the renders this stuff made back in the early 2000's, as a modeler it was always kind of weird.

Why don't they go open source the same way Blender did 20 years ago?

because of stupid capitalistic management
alot of ceos and managers are out of touch with the reality of their products and companies.

nah, lightwave was just one of newteks 3d programs. it shared code with the other programs that they developed. It would only make sense to go open source lightwave if Newtek decided to completely abandon ship with everything. otherwise, it would just make it easier for others to develope competing tools with the same tech.

You guys remember they tried a complete rewrite and just gave up?

lightwave died when the original devs left to create modo. newtek was never able to replace that talent and passion.

Modo is also just barely hanging in there under the Foundry, isn't it? I mean currently it's in a better position than LightWave, but still.

Imagine leaving one soulless corporation that doesn't care about whatever you are working on to create something new just to end up owned by another.

From what I can recall, it was something like the original devs wanted to rewrite lightwave, but newtek did not agree or maybe didnt have the funds to pay for it. so the devs lost hope in newtek and went their seperate way to create modo. modo had potential but the devs just never had any luck getting the backing they really needed I guess.
It's not just lightwave though. it did have a great renderer and modeler, but the rest coudnt keep up with the likes of maya or 3ds max, while maya and 3dsmax improved their modeling tools and went through mental ray, vray, arnold. there was nothing left for lightwave or cinema 4d to brag about. also with autodesk money, it made it difficult for any other company to compete in the same space.
