Progress has been slow lately since I'm having a hard time pinpointing what's wrong. Anyone wanna help me out?

looks good, anon

what is it you want?

>>What is it that you want?

Real hand drawn art just looks better.
My model also has that distinct 3DCG feel to it and I'm having a really hard time getting rid of it.

I guess I'm just looking for critique so I can fix this thing

a 360° turntable will always expose a real 3d model
your goal should be reenacting a 2d animation scene and look if the model holds up

Anonymous No. 870973

Impressive. The distortion wave is perhaps a little much but it looks good.

good point. Thanks anon

Thanks. Is the distortion too strong in both images, or just the first one?

>Real hand drawn art just looks better.
It literally, like in the literal sense of the word literal, does not.
You prefer 2D because it's what you're used to,so the flawless digital perfection of 3D looks "off" to you.
But it's not off, it's mathematically flawless, and that's what you don't like; which is why the best looking 3d (JoJo and Guilty Gear, and that anime about 80s/90s era arcade gaming) deliberately introduce errors. They'll stretch a model so that you get a partial orthographic view of something, or strangely pose / arrange characters to get a shot that literally only works for that exact viewing angle and then completely adjust everything in the scene when there's a new angle.

I don't have the images saved, they get posted from time to time, but in all three of my examples they literally stretch and distort the base meshes immensely (but it's invisible to the camera)

Can you give some insight into how you made this, what kind of shaders you're using, etc... ? This is actually really cool and I would like to do something similar trying to get the 2d feel on a 3d character.

I'm doing a lot of weird stuff in the shaders, but the final output is pretty close to standard cel shading.
The most important part is what's shown in the attachment, like what >>870991 says. The weirdness in the shaders is all so that I can have enough flexibility for this step.
There's also a post-process filter I wrote that mimics the "artifacts" you get when you stack sheets of celluloid and take a photo.

I'll probably make a video that walks through the rendering steps once this project is polished enough to present.

he means that 3d art won't perfectly replicate 2D art

there's plenty of factors that give it that overall outcome

i think it's weird that her mouth becomes an anime side mouth and then moves back in normal position as she keeps turning

Now that you mention it, it is pretty distracting. Not sure how I'm gonna fix it, but thanks for pointing that out

This looks absolutely stunning. What software are you using ?

Anonymous No. 871172

You've done a crackin' job, lad.

Honestly, I don't think there's much more you can do. Most of the art of keeping it looking 2D beyond this point falls upon the animator.

Things like slow rotations or high framerates pretty much always break the illusion, in no small part due to the fact that these things are almost never seen in hand drawn, 2D animation.

Looks a bit weird with the facial features smoothly interpolating into place like that, did you consider using a stepped interpolation instead? So the face stays in place until you reach a critical angle, and then the features snap into place on a single frame.
That way you don't really get the weird shifting around of the mouth like you do in the webm. And it'll lean a bit more into the 2d look.

Have you creating something interesting? Weeb shit will always look off, making it look good is like getting blood from a stone.

But don't worry, keep at it and you'll stop noticing how awful it actually looks. Everyone else can still tell, though.

Anon what would happen if you remove some in-between frames of your gif?
I think you nailed the effect. but is too fluid to the point it almost looks like.. well fluid. It my opinion that anime effect tends to look choopier.

I remember watching a video on a tecnique similar to this but used on hair only, good to see people aren't abandoning this idea of automating the way anime facea distort based on facing value.

I'll be doing the stepped stuff through some other method. I think you're right about the mouth moving funny though. I'll try adjusting the mouth curves.

>>871454
Probably not in its current state. The topology is horrible lol. It probably won't get fixed for a while since I have other more noticeable things to work on.

>>872087
Anime definitely has a choppier feel though. I might try adjusting the framerate and the distortion stuff like you did, but I think it needs something else.

Also, it means a lot to me that you found this project to be worth investing your own time into it. Thanks anon :)

>>871717
lol
What's your preferred style?

And for everyone else who's said nice things:
I guess this means I should finish off this project instead of forgetting about it like I tend to do. Thanks for holding me accountable, and for the motivation.

Damn, you're even deforming the hair. The only thing I could recommend at this point is maybe touch up the connection between the neck and the head. I find most anime actually has that portion of the neck be more relatively anatomically correct unless it's a full on chibi series or something.
