"the cool new tools" are usually janky crap that barely function and are immediately broken on every update.
Also if you want "cool new tools" get your hands on actual tools, want animation? export to Maya, want sick UV tools? export to Rizom, want wraps? export to R3DS, all have Max bridges.

Blender is knock off swiss army knife, always will be.
I use Blender mostly to try those python thingies that are always coming out, yes they are cheap and yes most are crap.
If you have expertise in Max there's no way in hell you'd want to change to Blender, even taking into account all the associated Autodesk bloat.

At my job, it's Modo or Blender.
And I've used 3DSMax for over a decade as well.
The turnoff on Modo was the horrible process of creating wires with a spline.
Nothing like Max.
Blender has similar features and a modifier stack like Max, but the UV tools suck.
So... Blender it is for me.
