Slow, awkward, and if it didn't look like a hundred or so flat shaded polygons, it was done on a machine that cost more than your house.

Mid-80's was the very dawn of CGI. Shit was literally done on Cray supercomputers and custom programmed software, like for The Last Starfighter in 1984. ILM also spent four months to create a (first) CGI character for a 10 second shot in Young Sherlock Holmes in 1985.
