🧵 Books for learning 3d
Anonymous at Mon, 3 Jan 2022 05:05:50 UTC No. 873581
I know you can learn from YouTube or some websites but I'm looking for some books that can really help me with starting 3d modeling.
Post what you can.

You really don't need books to learn this, but since you opened a thread about it, I wanted to say that I'm actually wondering if there are some related ADVANCED books for visuals arts in general, that could benefit 3D artists.
I feel like I'm in a phase where I struggle to find more advanced art topics and am sick of reading basic art 101 parroting from recently graduated students being featured on 80lv and similar. Everywhere I go the info is retardedly simple, even paid courses like Gnomon or CGMA. There's a shitton to learn in this field for sure, but everything is shallow as a puddle. Almost makes it seem like 3D art doesn't have so much depth after all. Even when I find some tutorials from masters of the craft where they explain their process, it is still usually very basic stuff - they just kinda do whatever and that's it.

That's a big secret to art, anon. Your fundamentals really are that important. Regarding skill beyond the intermediate plateau: It's probably occurred to you by now, that even among those artists who have developed a high technical skill, there are very, very few who stand out above the others. Saying that's just personal preference or that it's just an over saturated, competitive field is also a cop out. The fact remains that there is a world of difference between good artists and great artists, and that difference can only very rarely be attributed to a difference in skill. I'm not saying that it isn't something you can learn, I'm just suggesting that it's something you must cultivate as well.

its ironic that you say that since on discord you can read exclusive posts and discussions from top industry professionals and on top of that, there is no trolling or racism allowed while this board we are posting on is the exact opposite

Every art field has plenty of theory books which aren’t necessary but could be an interesting read. Are you saying no such thing exists for 3dcg?

Shitty 3D class in uni got me into it - I haven't really even thought about 3D before, even though I did play around with gamedev and other creative fields. It started from there, I had to learn 3ds max so I just grinded Arrimus3D videos on YT at the beginning. 2 weeks in, lecturer already thinks I've been experienced with 3D before taking the class and there was nothing else to learn from him, I was learning much faster from YT alone. Pirated some okay-ish course from Pluralsight or whatever and after that kinda went into environment art, making tiny scenes, experimenting and googling what I needed. Got into UE4 early. Then I joined CGPeers and downloaded everything I could. I haven't really followed a particular learning structure. Joined Discord communities and that's what really pushed to me get better, eventually leading to some features on ArtStation, 80lv articles and then job offers.
You just need to know how to learn and find information on google. It's easier than ever today, just join Discord communities and you will find all resources there.
