pls explain how to use the zbrush focal length properly, ive been trying to do some likeness study from internet pictures and its fucking hard to get things to align every fucking time i change image
any tuts you recommend that tackles this specific issue?
Anonymous at Fri, 21 Jan 2022 18:45:17 UTC No. 877278
I recommend you to learn how to draw so you could eyeball facial proportions and you won't have to use shitty photoshopped photos as references and spend hours moving a poly back and forth to achieve "perfect match".

I don't. I eyeball it as good as I can inside zbrush and use goz and Maya for a good camera perspective

Hey, Dunning Kruger. This anon >>877278 explained it to you. You overlay reference pictures to get the overall proportions but after that it's all eyeballing it. I sculpted hundreds of faces. If you can't draw the likeness of someone on paper then you will also not be able to sculpt someone's likeness no matter the tools you use. Normies can spot from a mile away the difference between some Dunning Kruger (you) who traces an image and an actual artist who traces the same exact image.

hey smoothbrain, i didn't ask about learning to draw, i asked about zbrush focal length specifically, learn to read and go back to /ic/ drawfaggot.

You don't sound very knowledgeable, but anyways, here is a tutorial on how to make ZBrush adjust to the focal lenght of the images you download without having to spend time actually having to develop the sense of proportion you need to have to become a proper sculptor.

By the way, how are your Will Smith sculpts coming along?

imagine you go to the hardware appliance store and at the customer service you ask the dude about a specific grinder you have, and tell him that you are having trouble about a specific groove you want to make, and a faggot turns his head and tells you to go back and learn to identify better trees before i cut them in order to have a better understanding of grinding wood...
fuck you smoothbrain...

Imagine trying to eat soup and you go to a store to ask what kind of spatula to use and then sperg out when people explains to you that you actually need a spoon and not a spatula.
"Hey smoothbrain! I was asking about spatulas, I don't want to use spoons!"

every reference picture will have a different focal length, you either adjust it per pic or learn to sculpt from what you see without lining up everything

this isnt true, anon. If your reference is the movie itself as opposed to red carpet pressers you can look up the focal length of the entire movie on one of many websites that have a database of this kind of stuff. For example, many movies are shot at 50mm and if you can isolate a sequence where the character you want turns his/her head from front view to side view while keeping the same facial expression you should use that ref instead of the still images you find on google images

OP has a point. Why should someone heave to learn to draw and boring bullshit when we now have software to do it all for us. It's 2022 FFS.
This tool sounds interesting. I tried the blender face builder addon but faced similar issues. I suspect software struggles with FOV if the background to foreground info is hard to detect and analyze

dont worry. Find one scene where you can see the character turning his head and/or the camera panning around the head and trim that section to use as your ref as opposed to taking random images from google images. You'll in effect have dozens to hundreds of frames at different angles with the same focal length from that isolated scene. If you download free software that lets you scrub frame by frame this result such as resolve, so much the better. NO ONE should use random google images in pureref - this is a major mistake

Derides actually learning something.
Hasn't even heard of ZBrush.

Like others have stated, pictures are taken with different focal lengths, so unless you are using reference taken from a single camera setting, you will need to do some 'eyeballling'.
Most shots are taken with a focal length of 70-100, so most people who try to model from reference images go for something like 80-85 in their 3d software, thus ending up somewhere in 'the middle'.
