Tried to practice handpainting textures. Anything I should fix with this? Using Substance Painter, by the way.

I'm starting small. I understand I'm not Joe Mad or one of the guys who works for Riot.

have you actually painted before. if not just uninstall the trial and max out on painting first

If that's how your reference actually looks then it's perfect! :)

You haven't even started at all. This sort of delusional humblebrag remarks will get you nowhere. STOP IT. Nobody with eyes to see falls for it, you're only lying to yourself. There's no advice I can give you because there's nothing for me to look at. You don't even know that you're supposed to use a tablet ffs.

It's a good start, blend the lines a bit more & add in some baked lighting

This. Handpainting doesn't really involve all that much hand painting anymore. Don't fall into that trap.
You bake some AO, throw it in there, adjust the colors, thats 80 % of your 'hand paint' right there.
Now you just add in small details - color the lips, eye shadow, color the eyes, intensify some shadows, a nice gradient from top to bottom always looks nice. Viola you're done.

>You bake some AO
What if there's nothing to bake? Am I stupid for not always sculpting something with 100k polys and decimating/retopoing it down to <10k?

Anonymous No. 877734

>>877724
nah, but it just means you're gonna have to do all the painting by hand then

Anonymous No. 877789

>>877724
you can bake AO even from low poly models

fix what ? Theres nothing to show here, at least try a bit dude. Look up hand painted texture ref and try to copy them. Nobody can help you if we don't know what's your goal, if you're doing some shitty mobile game character then yea it's almost finish then

Deluded trash advice. Post your work so we can all laugh at it, I dare you.

OP, just watch some YT vids about handpainting textures. Don't just listen to some trash advice from anonymous people.

You drew three solid lines, anon. Even for a simple skin, you just threw on some lazy fucking lines. What do you want the board to say? You could have done that in paint, you didn't need to buy substance.

You'll never be able to afford it if you keep coming to /3/ asking
>What do I fix?
when you've only put in 10 seconds of work. fuck off cris

Do you have some kind of reference? get a bit more strokes and start using gradients.

Retro sprite artist here. One of the best ways to bring your handpainted character to life is by hue shifting things. Even as a beginner its not to hard to grasp the difference between hot and cool colors. Light and perspective also play a big factor on pulling off a great looking texture, so focus on your lighting points and work from there. I like to start with darker colors and move into brighter ones, however it depends on your personal art style, skill level and pace. Before trying your hand at 3D, I would reccomend you work with 2D. Start by properly shading a ball and grow from there, make a ball model and add proper shading, add texture to your ball (try to make it glossy or matte). Once you have the confidence to start, shade more basic shapes, once you have human anatomy down you can move onto the complex stuff.

Ok cool thanks but how do I do this without putting in effort?

No. If you don't know how it's supposed to look why on Earth are you expecting it to somehow look good by randomly doing stuff?

So what’s wrong with this attempt in particular?

Learn color theory and do some studies, you cant hand paint without understanding digital art!

Anonymous No. 878562

>>878550
idk what to say, it's all wrong, there's no sense of material, you can't tell apart cloth from leather or whatever you're trying to represent

YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IT'S SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE AND YOU EXPECT OTHER PEOPLE TO MAGICALLY FUCKING KNOW?
COME THE FUCK ON IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO PUT IN THE FUCKING EFFORT THEN GET THE FUCK OFF THIS BOARD

These are also wrong or at least highly stylized approaches.

the point still stands though. anons got a point. colour theory is an important part for most art. even working in monochrome palettes, you still need a base understanding of how to convey lighting for it to look anywhere near how you'd probably want it to. the study itself is pretty mediocre, but it's a good foundation for a better outcome later on if the practice is still there

Do some actual painting in 2d before painting textures, you are gonna have a hard time otherwise. I'd suggest not using handpainted textures if you don't wanna do any 2d
