Genuine question: does anyone have examples of modern, "realistic" low poly/pixelated style? They always seem to be more on the cartoony side of things, but I always thought the pixelated textures would work great for rough grimy shit like concrete.

Good only on CRT monitors, otherwise trash. Low poly is cool.

There's no modern anything that isn't specifically going for that style. Just go through all the PS1 games and you will have plenty of reference.

I think these have a dark color scheme but still going for the slightly exxagerated low poly look. I guess closest to what I was thinking of is pic related, especially the environment.

Well I guess you're not wrong, MGS1 comes to mind.

There isn't any. Indie pixelshit is all about achieving a vague sense of oldschoolness with a total disregard for realism. I quite like the low res art style in old games, but I can rarely find any modern artists emulating it successfully. They always seem to focus too much on giving things cute retro features, vibrant colors and very obvious pixelation instead of just trying to capture a sense of realism at a low resolution. I think artists back in the day tried to work around the pixelation but nowadays people trying to emulate the style try to make the pixelation as obvious as possible, making models look more like poorly painted cardboard props.

Can you recall any modern artists who get it right?

No because I don't actually follow indie game art much, but I've definitely come across modern artists get it right according to my standards.
It could all just be personal preference though - who am I to say what's the right kind of pixel art. I do personally prefer the type of low res texture art that aims for realism, like old first person shooter textures with heavily baked shadows and highlights, but maybe other styles can work just as well depending on the situation.

i adore this style so much. Look how perfectly the pixelart style blends into 3d-geometry. There are not many good tools to get pixel-perfect uvs for pixelart-textures but when you go the extra mile to make it look like intentional pixelart and not just regular cg with shitty textures it always blows my mind.

seethe because i'm not good enough at pixel art to make it work for environments. people, vehicles and props i can just about get away with, but my complete lack of skill becomes immediately obvious when trying to do fields or buildings.

tempted to post my work on here but there would be the inevitable spastic neckbeard with an inferiority complex who would feel personally threatened in his sense of self worth and feel the need to attack me personally.
so fuck that.
there's great pixel artists who do realistic low poly out there though, it's not only the domain of hyperstylised indie games.

I don't know if it was the artist's intention. but they only used brown colors, everything is brown there is no other colors. I understand they are trying to emulate the atmosphere of quake 1 and give a feeling of post-apocalyptic, but after a while it is tiring to see only brown, even q1 has more colors than hrot.
