How come 1910 special effects look much better than modern marvel shit?

Practical effects + actual passion for the project, much smaller crews following a director's vision rather than a crew of thousands following a committee design
its the same in videogames, AAA is garbage, indie scene is where fun / innovation is. Once you become a 'production industry' you inevitably lose what made projects artful.
It's why manga / anime is popular while comic books and capeshit is on life support. Manga is mostly written by a single dude with some helpers following his vision, comicbooks used to be written for white boys, but now they're written for non-existent market of black gay trans lesbians where superman fights racism or some shit.
Imagine being passionate about such a project.

there were no special effects, they were actual stunts

>Buster Keaton
Because they never used green screen. Everything you see in 1910's films used real people, real objects and real crashes. They never needed a permit to film somewhere or a union that told them they could do something. The outcome is films with unbelivably marevelous quality, at the cost of actor safety.
I personally belive its why cult classics like The Thing were so succsessfull. Like >>877938 said, practical effects and passion is one hell of a combo.

Comics were never really great even before woke taking over. You can find a few good graphic novel series such as Fables Watchman, or Chew, but all capeshit is bad with few exceptions.
Manga artists usually work tirelessly and willing to work on one manga for years and years. Just high quality stuff everywhere, and Westetn capeshit creators don't read top manga or literature which would improve their comics with their influence past the same few tropes.

These aren't really special effects, stunts are different because there's much less editing trickery going on.
You'd love some of the stuff by George Melies. He was going off with mattes and hand-colored frames at the forefront of movies as storytelling at all, not to mention special effects.

With effect shots we go so overboard and depict falls and impacts so silly they're obv impossible to survive.
That falling damsel is caught at a velocity that would rip their arm out their socket etc.
Result is there is no sense of danger because we're aware how we're watching a computer animated cartoon where nothing has consequences.
Wonder Hulkman falling of some 100 story jet-fortress with the CGI camera spinning 1080 degrees while going thru his ear-canal and out his butt in bullet-time
while the sound goes all "BwwwwoooOOohhh!" has no more tension to it than Daffy Duck standing mid-air not yet realizing he's above a bottomless chasm.
With practical stunts our jaw drop because we're watching something lethal take place before us where all the physics of the realworld applies because what
we're seeing actually happened infront of a camera. This is why Buster Keaton still impress us, as do the Jackie Chan Hong Kong actions of the 80's and 90's.
Or them crazy Thai movies of the early ~2000 etc. Wherever you have a unregulated film-industry that is still able to endanger humans for entertainment I guess.

Indie games were notorious for low effort tranny shilling years before AAA studios made it the norm.
This is just your instinctual tendency to blame things on the "capitalism" bogeyman showing itself.

Aquatic Ambiance from Donkey Kong Country slowed down and I guess remixed a bit
so at the very least it isn't copyright-free
