virtual reality is kind of a dumb term. Graphics and immersion have come so far that you dont even need to strap a big thing onto your head. Imo, 2d graphics can be virtual reality too. Heck, even social media is virtual reality since its so different from real reality.

Perhaps it is a spectrum, but you can say the same about movies/shows which suck you in as well. And although not virtual reading a good book can engross the reader enough that you feel like you're in it, or simply daydreaming can have the same detachment from material reality.
Thing is with VR headsets is that your body feels very connected to a different world in a way hard to replicate otherwise, you'll actually flinch in VR as if it was real. So you're right that a 2D horror game, strong dream, or movie can have similar effect. But VR is very consistent with delivery of your virtual experience feeling like reality.

don't know if you've tried vr, but it's totally different. I kinda used to think the same until I tried, it's really unique and nothing like playing normally

Is this still the case in 2022? This was my experience five years ago with the Rift and Vive, has the technology really stagnated? Is "screen door effect" still a thing?

Maybe its too clunky for me. I also notice the novelty wears off after a while and VR doesnt feel super useful anymore. I find it much easier to become immersed with any game that lets a player use a joystick and mouse at the same time. I may be very particular but I find this is the best game input method to date.

Alyx was my favorite but I couldnt finish it.
Got any VR game recommendations?

Movies and books can definitely take you to other places, but I dont know if you can call those virtual. I would figure something virtual is something that can only be created on a computer. Movies and books are things that people have to work on a lot in real life. Computers can be involved, but they are not central to their medium.

if you boil it down, VR is just motion tracking in a 3d space. it's literally better 3d than all the 3d tv and movie shit as well as kinect and all that shit though. I got a modded hp reverb g2 (NO screendoor effect) with valve knuckles and only a few games like half life alyx, asgards wrath, and lone echo really trick my mind. when im super baked it feels sort of like "reality with a condom on" if that makes sense.

of course it's not real but you gotta suspend reality a bit when doing VR just like you do when watching a movie or reading a book.
