Everyone seems to use substance these days, im not sure if mudbox is used in the industry as much. Maybe 10 years ago, sure.
Arrimus3D is the best 3ds max modelling youtuber out there. So much content and still active

update:
following a crate tutorial. feel a bit filtered by it (although, i did feel the same with blender when i first started using a few years ago)
my current issue is that the UI feels so clunky. it keeps giving me tiny GUIs whenever i try and do stuff (insetting, for example). i also don't see it being good for real-time materials - but we'll see.

You can make all those planks be separate pieces. Look at how crates like this are built. Model it like that. They don't pop into existence as a single piece without any gaps. And it's easier to model it like that, so it's a double win. More realistic and simpler topology.

Mudbox is pretty trash for painting. You should probably just go with Substance Painter.

Why max and mudbox? Really odd choices for someone starting 3D in current year If you're a beginner you probably should've gone with blender.
>bit the bullet
I hope this doesn't mean you paid for a license.

When i was in education, 3ds max/maya with mudbox was what was taught in the curriculum in Scotland. This was 2012, though. Things have changed.

Bluepill me on Mudbox. It must be good for something, right? I kinda like mud, it's hard for me to accept that entire box of mud is completely useless.

Mudbox has the best sculpting UI. It's the easiest way to transition from clay sculpting to digital sculting.
