Reject garbage - embrace what looks good to you. You Do not need to fall into a camp. There are no sides, no winning, no market share. At the end of the day, just make whatever the hell you want. trends are weak, click bait and style-fixation are markers of an insecure, unskilled artist . Do not need to justify whatever it is you produce, just produce it and flow with styles and do not settle for absolutes

you need to consider economics.
It's physically impossible for a single 1MA developer to make a 50 hour jrpg if he wants next gen AAA models that takes six months to be made.
At some point you need to compromise if you're an indie.

Oh no, it's you.
First of all, anyone trying to make a 50-hour JRPG alone is frankly insane, even if the graphics were completely text-based. If you're going to undertake such a massive feat, you're clearly trying to make some kind of magnum opus, so why not make the best graphics you can? Each model would take 6 months only if you're either incredibly lazy or you're adding insane amounts of detail, like millions of polygons which is completely impractical for any kind of game.
Second, I'm not the guy you're replying to, but I agree that you don't need to fall into a camp. If low-poly models with extremely pixelated textures is what you want, go for it. If you decide later on that you would like your models more if they were mostly untextured with textures only where it really counts, then fine. Like he said, in the end, just do whatever's best for you.

because I started with modelling gun parts and the fruit isn't gonna fall away from the tree so I'll stay on my mid-poly renders
